Paul Kantner passes at 74.

Holy crap this has been a rough year for our rock and roll heroes; the very first album I ever purchased as a 12 year old was his first use of the "Starship" billing:
Three huge losses and January isn't even over...
On a "fan" level, this is much more significant to me than the other recent names but at 74 he had been through and contributed in his day to such a huge range of not only music but culture and change generally that I think he would have been happy with that number if asked in 1967.
Given his peer group, I think it will be an unfortunate fact that the obits sections of the monthlies will be running a few more pages of big names over the next few years.
Thanks Paul
Agreed Ron - it is probably time to prepare to say farewell to many of the rock legends.
Consider the lifestyle and everything these people had I'd say this generation made the most of everything. Look where we are now with the dropout and sex, drugs, rock and roll generation.
Certainly opened up the west coast scene from the east coast sound, flower power was very potent.
Signe Anderson passed away a few days ago too. Preferred the Grace Slick era, any female singer whose ambition was to be louder (and with lifestyle to suit) was interesting. When I was young I was unable to lay my hands on Surrealistic Pillow so got a copy of Flight Log. Fabulous compilation and a good introduction to the band. They even did a filmed roof top concert before anyone else did.
There were some CD's issued a few years back, probably from the Fillmore. One was something like "Signe's last Show" and the other "Grace's First" I didn't buy them because the reviews I read said that SQ was not too good but they are great historical records and show the development of JA into major league players.
I wonder if she ever regretted leaving?
