Naim App (or similar) on Apple Macbook

Posted by: Mr Frog on 03 February 2016

I guess the answer to this question is probably no, but thought I'd ask - just in case I've missed something along the way

FLAC music is stored on a QNAP NAS feeding the Naim streamer (ND5XS) via MinimServer (installed on the NAS and transcoding to WAV 24) and all controlled nicely using iPhones and iPhones (Naim App)

Minim Watch is obviously installed on the Mac to control MinimServer etc;

When using the Mac, it would be nice to control the music replay and iRadio (ND5XS) etc; without having to 'find' another device to perform this function. But, as it stands, obviously this has to be done by picking up an iPhone or iPad with the Naim App.

Not a great inconvenience, but really would be 'icing on the cake', if it could also be controlled using an App on the Mac.

Is there anything out there that can perform this function or is it just a 'pipe dream'?

You could use Kinsky, provided by what shall only be known here as 'The Scottish Company' [goes outside, whistles, turns round thrice]: it will 'see' your music library, and push it to the 'rooms' it sees on the network, as well as accessing internet radio stations.

Right now on my network it's seeing three rooms: NDS, Uniti and Mu-so Qb, and I can direct music to any one of them, or indeed all of them.

It works with most network playback devices, inc the Naims, but IMO and IME it's not as slick as using the Naim app.

Thanks Andrew, I'll give it a try.

Incidentally, how did you get on the the Mac Mini/Dac?

Using Kinsky too. Free. Works well. Main failing is a lack of a search facility.

Tried QuteControl. Paid.  Finds NDS but and Minimserver but never gets further than that.  Waste of money for me.

Also tried running Naim App in emulator but slow and large performance overhead in using emulator.

Mac Mini working well - still waiting for LPSU to arrive. Been through a lot of DACs of late for reviewing purposes, with mixed results, but for now still prefer the flexibility of UPnP, though I can see the appeal of 'Macs and DACs', too.

My solution is to install BubbleUPnPServer (either on your NAS or you could run it on your Mac) which allows you to create a OpenHome compatible version of any UPnP renderer.  You can then use the (much nicer in my opinion) Kazoo from Macbeth (or is is another Scottish thing!).

Thanks everyone, really appreciate your help

Installed Kinsky and it is EXACTLY what I was looking for - brilliant advice from you guys.

Eloise - had a look at Kazoo (which I believe has the search function, lacking from Kinsky), but it doesn't seem to operate correctly - constantly "searching for room". It sees MinimServer okay but won't connect.

Perhaps I need use BubbleUPnPServer for it to work (??). If so, presumably it replaces MinimServer or do they work in unison? i.e MinimServer with Naim App (iPhoneiPad) and BubbleUPnPServer with Kazoo (Mac)

Yes you need to download BubbleUPnPServer.  It doesn't replace MinimServer but acts as an interface / helper between a "standard" UPnP renderer (such as the Naim ND and Uniti ranges) and Linn's OpenHome compatible control point applications.

AFAIK it should run on your QNAP.

Hi Eloise - installed BubbleUPnpServer on QNAP and Kazoo now works perfectly.

Thanks for all you help. Much appreciated

Likewise Eloise. Bubble Upnp on Synology and Kazoo on iMac. Allows search. Tx

+1 for a desktop version of the Naim app, but thanks as well for the Kinsky recommendation.  Installed without problems, and very handy if I'm at the computer and my iPad is on the other side of the room.

I use Qutecontrol on my MacBook Air, works OK. It's very simple but allows me to see what is playing and change tracks. Only issue lately and may be to do with my network, it stops tracks when going back through menus. I was running Asset and Twonky side by side so that might be the issue.

Search Qutecontrol as there have been other posts

After reading the above posts, I installed Kinsky on my MacBook. However, so far I seem only to be able to play one track at a time.
Can anyone explain how to play an entire album?
I'm probably doing something stupid but so far I can't work out quite what...
Like several of you, it's a useful thing to have when I'm on my MacBook, so I'm not juggling between MacBook and iPhone or iPad...
