Superuniti Spotify Blasting 100% volume away from home. - Risk of damaging your speakers

Posted by: Luis Norton Sampaio on 05 February 2016

Left my Superuniti plugged in in Spotify volume in 0% (paused). While I was away from home the amp suddently blasted my speakers at 100%. Luckily I had someone at home (who jumped to the ceiling ) otherwise speakers would have fried.

Has this happened to someone else.? It happened when i got in the car and switched Spotify from superuniti to car .

It would be really good that in this Spotify mode the volume would be limited as you can configure (I have 50%)

I once had a similar incident when I did a firmware update to my Superuniti. As well as turning on an iRadio stream that I had both turned off and muted, the input trim had been reset from 60% to 100% during the update. Fortunately, my speakers survived, although the cat refused to go back into the room for several days.

Does not the max volume setting prevent this?

Not while in Spotify.

I am now having a rule to switch input and avoid (as much as I can remember) to leave it in Spotify mode.

You could also just mute or turn the volume down on your amp or preamp.

Not leaving it in Spotify mode wouldn't make a difference surely as it automatically switches to Spotift if you play something via Spotify Connect (which I assume is what you did in error).

Muting, rather than lowering the volume to zero, would be the solution.

Turning off would guarantee safety!

Yes, George, but for good reasons it's not how you're supposed to use a SuperUniti.

Dear Goon,

What happens if you   do   turn one off?

There are times when one must turn off or indeed it happens involuntarily such as a power cut or the trip cuts out on the Consumer Unit ...

I am curious as to why automated systems cannot be designed to be turned off as a matter of course in these energy conscious times?

Of course one turns it off when away for a while. But they're not meant to be turned on and off every time you use them. This avoids the warm-up period before they sound optimal. I accept it's not necessarily energy efficient.

I don't think this is a reliable solution unless you have an analogue preamp.
