Hugo, Interconnects

Posted by: Ryder35 on 05 February 2016

Sorry to bring up the Hugo! I am looking at getting a 2Qute/Hugo and was just wondering what interconnect people use to connect to their Pre amps. I will be connecting to a 2872 or a 272 (both have din and RCA)

I use a tellurium q black which is brilliant.  I have also used a Chord Anthem Reference which was good, but the TQ Black beats it for less money

Are you using RCA to RCA or RCA to Din?

RCA to RCA

I use Chord Chorus Reference RCA-DIN.

So is RCA to din better than RCA to RCA? If so why would that be?

Yes, all else being equal an RCA-DIN sounds preferable to an RCA-RCA.  Purely down to the DIN being a better connector for audio (see FAQ) and the RCA being far from ideal from an audio point of view.

Naim don't use DINs just be different or difficult - they really do make a difference for the better.

Ryder35, I was looking for an upgrade on my Chord Chameleon RCA-RCA and was recommended I tried the Chorus Reference by 'the cable doctor' due to it being able to be configured in RCA-DIN. I was only able to demo it in RCA-RCA but was satisfied enough with the improvement over my Chameleon. Ordered the Chorus Reference in RCA-DIN and was pleasantly surprised to find that it sounded noticeably better than the RCA-RCA version I had initially demo'd.

1 metre of DNM interconnect cable with Eichman bullet plugs on one end and a DNM polycarbonate 5-pin DIN plug on the other. Preferred this to an RCA-DIN Hi-line. The Hi-line was more resolving but the sound seemed a bit mechanical and over-precise. The DNM cable a bit warmer and more organic.

Why use an external DAC with a 272? Most of it is then redundant.

Hi Chris,

I was waiting for someone to ask that

I absolutely love the flexibility of a mac mini: Roon, all the streaming services now and in the future etc. I have also got a little fed up with the Tidal drop outs on the 272 that do not happen if I stream it via my Mac. It has all highlighted to me that maybe having the streaming tech, which is evolving quickly, tied to the pre is a mistake for me.

Because of this I tried my mac though the digital in and it did not sound as good as the 272 so I borrowed a Hugo. My dealer is being very understanding and is offering me a trade in on the 272 for a 2Qute 282 Hicap for less than the price of an XPS which was my next step with the 272 so I am considering a change in philosophy!

Thought it might be something like that - in which case a 282 sounds like a good plan...

borrowing it over the weekend so I guess I'll find out soon!

Naim do make a standard RCA to DIN cable, please ask your dealer for it. I would just use the Naim one.

And Richard is 100 % correct, one of the biggest musical upgrades I got was switching from RCA-RCA to RCA-DIN.

Thanks for the advice. I might start with the standard one and see how I get on. probably a bit cheaper than some of the alternatives too!
