QNAP HS-251 NAS Drive dropping out of network

Posted by: Lanesra on 06 February 2016

Yesterday my QNAP HS-251 NAS Drive arrived.

I've connected it directly to my router using both supplied ethernet cables. But despite this, it keeps dropping out of the network.

I know the network is working fine as I'm able to connect to the internet with no problems via my desktop PC, mobile 'phone and iPad.

Does anyone know how to resolve this?

Thanks in advance.

SJBABBEY/ Simon,

In order to get my NAS Drive to wake up, will I need to do the boot-up without the HDD's installed? So it formats them again?

It's not the end of the world if I do at the moment, as I've only copied about 8 CD's to the HHD.

No, you should be able to connect to the NAS using QFinder Pro but, if you cannot connect to it and restarting your router doesn't wake it up, you should be able to restart the NAS using the power switch. Andrew suggested removing the HDDs because you indicated that the NAS had failed to format your Hard Drives. Now that they are formatted there is no need to do this again.

SJBABBEY/ DRPO,

I'm still having problems. QFinder Pro isn't even "seeing" my NAS drive at the moment. I've given up trying to resolve this by myself and have put a service ticket request into QNAP support.

If they can't help me resolve the issue, then the NAS drive shall be returned to the well known online retailer.

Thanks for your help.

Update:

I'm returning the NAS drive back to the well-known online retailer and have ordered a replacement.

Having spent all weekend trying to sort this and a couple of hours trying to sort the issue with QNAP's technical support in the USA, it transpired that there was a fault with one of the HDD's.

Thanks everyone for your help in trying to resolve this.

Ah right - well yes, that'll do it!

You know where we are if you need more advice when the new one arrives.

Andrew,

There's plenty of information in the thread to get my replacement NAS drive running already. So, let's hope the new NAS drive has on problems!

Thanks for your help.

Update:

I've just finished setting up my replacement QNAP HS-251+ NAS drive. Special thanks go to Adam Zielinski for e-mailing me loads of jpeg files explaining what all the settings need to be. I was able to run through all the configurations without the NAS drive "dozing off".

Also, thanks everyone else for your help in trying to resolve the issues with my first NAS drive.

It's currently synchronising the RAID Group, which looks like it's going to take several hours to finish. So I'm going back downstairs to listen to more CD's through my newly installed Neat Motive SX5i's.

Update: due to my house being decorated, I have only just got round to getting my UnitiQute 2 up and running.

My query is: how do I get my UQ2 to "see" my NAS drive so I can stream FLAC files from it?

Posted on: 15 March 2016 by Adam Zielinski

Hi - by connecting it to the network

If your NAS has a server software running on it, once UQ is connected, click PC button on your remote.

UPnP is the one you need. The input needs to be enabled on your UQ.

If you've set t up as per instructions, your UQ will see the server.

Hi Adam,

Correction: my UQ2 is seeing my NAS drive (called MusicNAS), but then I get the message: "Source Err. - Unable to Browse".

Hi - you need to enable 'guest' privelages with full access to the part of your NAS where you store the music.

Another thing - what server software are you using?

Posted on: 16 March 2016 by Adam Zielinski

If you copied my NAS settings that is the correct message - I get the same

Try to install MinimServer on your NAS. It's free. Then when you browse the servers on your UQ or N272 go into the MinimServer rather than MusicNAS

if you like the MinimServer you can make a customary donation..

In my set up MusicNAS is just a repository.

Adam,

I've installed MinimServer on my NAS.

After resetting my UQ2, it was able to "see" MinimServer and I'm now able to play my rips through my UQ2.

I still don't understand why my UQ2 is unable to play my rips through MusicNas, though. So I've e-mailed Naim support for assistance.

Thanks again for your help. My UQ2 will serve me nicely until my N272/250 is installed in just under 3 weeks time.

I think it's the way the MusicNas has been set up on my system in the first place - as a repository of UnitiServe SSD. That's what the settings have been made for.
When I use my streamers I see 'MusicNas' and 'Unitiserve'. MusicNas is blocked (no access) and 'UnitiServe' is the one I can 'browse'.

Robert

I've just checked something - if you've set up your QNAP following my set up, you need to run a music server software. Essentially 'MusicNas' has been set up as a library that can only be accessed by either a UnitiServe or a UPnP server (UntiServe is a UPnP server as well). So an external streamer will not be able to access it.

I think that is the reason why you were getting 'MusicNas - unable to browse' message.

Adam,

Yes I set up my NAS drive using the screenshots you e-mailed me.

Do you know if it's possible to set my NAS drive so my UQ2 can access the files without me needing MinimServer? This will mean adjusting the set-up of my NAS drive so it doesn't quite match yours.

If my wife wants to listen to ripped CD's, she's going to get confused if she "sees" my UQ2 showing 3 networks (my router shows up, too).

Minim is one of the best, most flexible and good sounding upnp servers around. I suggest you use it. The other servers will only show up if you go right back to the beginning in the Naim app, which is something you never need to do in practice. Minim transcodes FLAC to WAV and handles gapless files, which a lot of other servers cannot do.

Let me double check and I will email you if I can adjust the setting. Now I'm curious myself, so I must find out

Hungryhalibut,

OK, I'll stick with using MinimServer as it seems to be the best solution to enable my UQ2 to "see" my NAS drive.

One query, though: I've ripped all my CD's to lossless uncompressed FLAC files, because of their supposedly better metadata. Should I have ripped to WAV for better sound quality instead? If so, how do I get MinimServer transcode my FLAC files to WAV files?

There's no rush as I'm heading to the airport in 20 minutes and I won't be back home until Monday evening.

FLAC is perfectly fine. You don't even need to transcode it. Most of us cannot hear differences between FLAC and WAV.

I've got cloth ears and can easily tell the difference. WAV files mean there is less for the streamer to do to extract the PCM stream, or whatever it has to do. Details of how to do it are on the Minim website. It needs MinimStreamer to be downloaded, which is very easy.

I cannot really tell if it's FLAC and WAV.

One thing LANESRA - iTunes will not read FLAC files. Not sure if it an issue for not for you, but worth knowing, before your rip 1000s of CDs.
