Uniti 2 and what TT?
Posted by: spurrier sucks on 07 February 2016
i have a Uniti 2 and I'm considering adding a TT for fun mostly. Streaming is my main source but for fun spinning some vinyl is on my radar. I don't want to over do it but something that is on par with my U2. Thinking Rega 3 or 6. Any other recommendations? What about Naim Stageline N? Overkill or is there something else to consider? TIA
As far as a phono stage is concerned, the Stageline N is ideal - you can start off just using the powered AUX2 input on the Uniti2 and then if you wish to upgrade with a dedicated power supply on the Stageline at some point in the future, you can try that out.
Lots of options out there for a vinyl front end. Serious performance starts with the rega RP3 and try to check out some of the Pro-ject decks - they often come as good value packages bundled with Ortofon cartridges at a hefty discount over buying separately.
I have a U2 with a RP6 and its sounds great, so much better then my old Debut I had with a 2M Blue.
So a RP6 will not out perform the U2?
Definitely Rega RP6 with an Exact cartridge. Possibly a Rega Aria phonostage.
I started off with a Uniti and then bought a basic LP12 with a Hercules power supply and Naim Prefix phonostage; which are both very good value and a neat internal solution, if you want to keep the box count down - all thought out and put together so well by Peter at Cymbiosis . If it is a purchase for the long term I would recommend spending a little bit more, you will not be disappointed. The build quality of the LP12 is superb and it sang so sweetly with the Uniti, which powered the Prefix. As I upgraded the turntable I added a Supernait 2, but kept the Uniti as an excellent source from a separate adjoining room for my main system.
RP6/Exact with Stageline. Works well and well worth the step up from the RP3.

According to source first theory the source should always vastly out perform all the rest of the chain, and you should always use cheapo speakers to avoid revealing deficiencies in the other components, by limiting the overall degree of the revealing nature of a system.
So you'll always get people recommending sources that out perform the rest of the system, because they believe that's the only correct approach.
Having said that, in this case, I don't if an RP6 will outperform a Uniti2; I don't know enough about the RP6.
Building on what Huge just wrote. RP6 will outperform the Uniti range - tested that myself ![]()
Once you move into SuperNait teritory, only then the limiations of the source start becoming apparent.
As per Richard, the Stageline is the ideal partner for your U2. If you decide for a Rega RP6, try to compare the Exact cartridge to a Dynavector 10x5, or if funds allow, a DV20.
