nDAC not receiving Qobuz Hi-Res audio from iPad

Posted by: pedimp on 07 February 2016

The dialogue I had with Naim technical support on this subject might interest a wider audience. See e-mails below.

I think it's a pity that nDac doesn't offer this possibility, because, despite having been announced as "The First S/PDIF Jitter-Free DAC", nDac sounds evidently better whan receiving audio from USB connections in comparison to (bit-transparent) S/PDIF connections.

I have a Naim DAC (serial number 290173) updated to the latest firmware version (4.11.8).
My favourite way of using it is the Qobuz Cd-quality FLAC streaming played on iPad connected to the nDAC's USB input via lightning adapter.
Unluckily, this way the Qobuz Hi-Res streaming (up to 24/192) doesn't work: the Hi-Res indicator on the nDAC doesn't light. I have already contacted Qobuz, they claim that iPad Hi-Res USB output works on several DACs, but not on the Naim DAC.
I am very disappointed about this, because I like the sound of the USB connection better than any (even costly) SPDIF connection, and would like to avoid using USB to SPDIF bridges.
I strongly hope that a new firmware version for the nDac may overcome this limit!

Hi Peter,
Although we are aware of people using their iPhones and iPads in this way with the Naim DAC it is not something that we officially support and as such it is not something that we plan to enhance or extend.

Dear Mr Harris,
there must be some misunderstanding.
Page 1 of the Naim DAC Reference Manual explicitly highlights and stresses that it is "Made for iPod and iPhone".
A curious way of "not officially supporting"...

Hi Peter,
The “Made for iPod and iPhone” certification from Apple covered playback from the Apple device using the Apple music player application only – not third party applications. Third party applications do not form part of the “Made for iPod and iPhone” certification and as such they are not (and have never been) guaranteed to work as a digital source via USB – hence digital audio output from third party applications such as Quobuz / TIDAL / Spotify etc. could never be listed as officially supported.
Provision for the lightning equipped Apple devices are not included in the original “Made for iPod and iPhone” certification, however at this time Apple do maintain backwards support in those devices but the “Made for iPod and iPhone” certification has been superseded / revised now as Apple move towards an “untethered” world which includes a great deal of update to direct / tethered playback support (which you can read as “Apple may decide to remove support for this legacy functionality from currently supported devices as they see fit in the future&rdquo.
Best Regards
Phil Harris

Hi Phil,
thanks for your detailed (though sad!) answer.
Which is the Naim recommended way to reproduce Qobuz streaming with the nDAC?

Hi Peter,
As the Naim DAC has S/PDIF inputs then our suggestion would be to take an S/PDIF output from a device that can access the audio that you wish to listen to and feed that into the DAC.

A question to clarify ... are you connecting the output of the iPad directly to the USB (type A) input on the nDAC?  If so then yes this is limited to (approx.) CD quality (16/44.1 and 16/48 possibly 24 bit versions of it too).

This is the officially supported, tethered, method of connecting an iPad to an external device such as a DAC.

Now with some DACs people have been able to connect to the "computer" interface (USB type B) input on their DAC (which the nDAC doesn't offer) using an iPad and the Camera Connection Kit.  In this instance all Apple "authentication" is bypassed so apps can then be written which allows high resolution audio to be output.  You may be able to do similar with your nDAC using a USB to SPDIF converter but I have no knowledge of which devices may work (the iPad is limited to low power devices).

This method is not officially supported by Apple - read iOS updates may stop it working.

So a better title for this 'issue' would be "Apple not outputing HighRes audio via USB"!!!!

Not exactly, Aleg,
Qobuz claims that iPad outputs their Hi-Res streaming through the lightning adapter, and that several DACs can receive it:
http://blogsv2.qobuz.com/qobuz...-it-is-now-possible/

My disappointment is that the nDAC doesn't belong to the list of compatible DACs!

More in general, I would like to find a way to stream Qobuz hi-res audio into nDAC without SPDIF, because, although on the whole I love my nDAC, I find it fails the claim of making the SPDIF input sound equivalent to the USB one (where the DAC is the actual "player" of the file).

Anyone having suggestions?

Yes, I am connecting the iPad directly to the USB input of the nDAC. I tried both the front and the rear USB input.

Sorry if this is a little off topic, but could I plug my iPad into the front of my 272 (the USB) and listen to Qobuz in at least CD quality?

It should work. At least it works on the nDAC, with marvellous results!

Hmmm...... Thanks!

Well the nDAC pre-dates the Lightning output from the newer iPads and iPad doesn't output the HighRes over USB, so what is there to blame Naim for?

There will always be newer technology and capabilities that aren't supported on older devices.

According to Qobuz this is not true, as I wrote before.

It can be done, but requires patience. I don't own an nDAC any longer so I can't test this, but what you do is:

- Connect the iPad

- Play something on the Apple music App that Naim do support

- Pause it

- Open Quobuz and play there

I have posted this in the past, so I'll have a quick look.

Sorry yes the front OR rear on the nDAC (both are identical to all intents and purposes).

Anyway to stream high res from the iPad using Quobuz (or various other apps) need a DAC which has a standard USB Class Audio compatible interface - typically theses use USB Type-B connection as found on a printer for example.  You also need the Camera Connection Kit interface.  The Naim DAC V1 is likely usable in this manner

The nDAC has a different kind of USB interface designed for connecting to memory sticks and similar (including iOS devices but this uses a different kind of interface which is limited to CD redbook quality).

As I say yes and no...  You are both kind of right and both wrong!

Thank you very much for the clarification!

I'll try if it works with the DAC V1 at my dealer's shop.

Before the new firmware update my iPad connected to ndac was no where near up to red book resolution with streamed content , now after the firmware update it does sound up to red book standard from the USB input
