Are the days of HiCap/Supercap power supplies numbered?

I mean will anyone be interested in these in 5 years?

Assuming Naim re-do the preamplifier line up at some stage it seems to me that XPS type supplies are the way to go. Can't see Naim bringing out preamp replacement models without on board streaming capability.

Can you?

I would think so. I have just said in another thread that all these are just too complex - why should signals be routed through the power supply before going into the power amp?

We have NAP200 taking inputs via a 4 pin DIN and the rest of  the NAP taking XLR. (ok yes I know the 4 pin DIN is for powering a preamp).

The geese of it is the concept of external power supplies for preamps and signaling to power amps should be standardized.

My understanding is that the 4-pin DIN and signals passing "through" the power supplies is down to Naim's single point earthing philosophy and avoiding each loops.

I never really understood why Naim suddenly switched to 3-pin XLR on the NAP250 upwards (especially as its 3-pin XLR on the NAP250 and then 2x 3-pin XLR on the NAP300 and NAP500); though I understand it is a legacy thing and to do with taxation - with XLR there they managed to get them classed as professional equipment rather than domestic or something.  Anyway 3-pin XLR should be reserved for true balanced connections not wired willy-nilly to suit (just my opinion).

Oh Naim are still making these strange objects called compact disc players.

There is a special pleasure in swinging open the door, putting a CD into place, letting the puck clamp the disc down with a little clunk and then swinging the door gently closed again, mfeeling the magnetic latch hold it closed.  Even though most of my CDs have been ripped to my Unitiserve, sometimes I still play a CD the old way just for the feeling of occasion that it creates. This is part of why I bought an ex-demo CDX2 even though strictly speaking I didn't need to do so.

The multiple large black boxes you need for a big Naim system are a bit of a nuisance and it'd be lovely to do away with them. Although seperating the power supplies gives certain advantages, there are distinct disadvantages with respect to sound quality in having to use external cabling to connect them. Note that the Statements do away with Burndys and I've no doubt this contributes to the excellent quality of their sound.
