Linn Isobarik (DMS or PMS)

anyone compared this old classic to modern speakers in the context of a Naim system? Just curious to know what the outcome was/is... and what we have learnt since those heady days...

How big is your office Ken? mine is 2x3mtrs
SL2 never sounds small or bass light in hereā¦.
roughly 2.8 x 3.2 m Gary...
i can follow a bass guitar, or double bass OK , but whe it comes to organ music -- the SL2s canot go 'all the way' down -- not that i would expect them to -- physics dictates that you need size for that.
ps: actually, one effect of the SL cables is to exten bass output -- and so these days, its quite easy for me to tell that there ae some notes that the SL2 is struggling a litle bit to reproduce -- but as i say, i notice that in church organ music...

Just as well as i don't listen to any church organ music.... I guess Hammond organ in Jazz doesn't count.
Ken & Gary,
I'm planning to move to a different apartment allowing me to have a dedicated music room.
However I am not sure how the 500 series system + SL2 will sound since it's a tiny room (3.3 * 2.8 meters).
What do you think from your experience?
Thanks,
BP.

thats almost the size of my listening room/office. and the SL2s work very well in there. so the omens are good, i'd say...

Well Graham popped The question, and this was the responce!
Paraphrased by Graham.
"They admitted that Naim speakers aren't as successful as their electronics, largely because customers tend to ask for and gravitate to better known speaker brands. Not clear whether they will do anything via the Focal route, again it comes down to priorities. We do of course have Ovator S600s and S800s and anyone who has heard a nicely run in pair in an active system will know that they can do the business. They did also say that Focal has access to Naim electronics when designing new models and this would likely explain why newer designs like the Sopra 2s apparently work better (based on other comments on the forum, I've not heard them myself)."
Thanks Graham!
Ok, Active fans, If choice is a good thing, lets put the Forum to work.
Petition Naim with numbers, which would show are interest in a joint R&D with respect to Active Home Speakers to complement Naims 500 & Classic Amps !

As Ken says, no problem at all. I am constantly surprised at how good they sound in my confined space, and even though i have heard them play in much larger rooms with bigger amps, i don't consider i've heard them sound appreciably better than in my room. Near field listening has advantages as well as disadvantages.
I wonder what difficulties present themselves when designing a speaker that can be operated in active mode. I'm sure it's not as simple as just ripping out the crossover. It would be interesting to get an answer from Naim on that one. Shame I didn't think of that question before Graham went on his visit. Maybe I'll save it for my next visit, if that ever happens.

been there done that -- in connection with floaty snaxo, which i thought was a real goer, but turned out non-viable given potentially low numbers. and the forum is not really an accurate enough mkt research tool although i know Naim Audio very likely pay attention to views expressed here -- neg and pos.
when you say 'joint' you mean you will fund some of the R&D? or?

I can't afford a 252 less known a 552>500> Active SBL's System! LOL.....
Joint between Focal & Naim, If I'm comprehending correctly, surely Graham got the jist of it!

Yes, Ken I do remember that Jon Honeywell, Floating Snaxo, and DB said the heck with it that's why he has The BMR 2.5 two way S 800's, which Naim was clear to state they will do the business!!!!!!

It's not just designing the speakers to run in either passive or active modes, remember that you have to design a Snaxo too (not a trivial task), get all the (electronic) cross overs/slopes etc right and spend hundreds of hours listening to it...

True of course.
Have run DMS Isobariks since 1984 and can't see me changing now although a few years ago realised they need improving. I brought a late pair and have fitted the base units from the Linn Keltic replaced the mids with Kevlar coned Monicar SPH-135EP units and Scanspeak D2905/9700 trebles. They still retain that Isobariks signature sound but so much more. It must be catching as I have three other friends locally run Bariks.

How far were you away form the speakers?
2 metres Kuma.
ah ok thanks Gary.
So that's not really a near-field listening.
But if you were to sit within 1m from the speakers, you would never be able to turn up the volume enough to excite the floor. ![]()

I've been running mine since 1990, picked them up for 3k a steal. They are the later version pictured in this post.
Thanks for the info. on drivers, mine are tight and sound great, Bit nice to know about driver upgrades.

Hello Richard.
You do have the most unusual and amazing Briks set up!
