Minimum speaker cable length for TQ black to use with DAC V1+NAP100+Neat SX2?

Posted by: Tweed1234 on 11 February 2016

Have just changed speaker cable from NAC A5 to Tellurium Q Black in my main system - after a suitably long period of run-in they have done wonders to my Focals and SuperUniti.

Am now going to do same to my second system - I've heard the 3.5m min length only really applies to NAC A5 - and particularly does not apply to TQ Blacks.  I only really need a 1m pair in my media room, and it would be nice to not have cable clutter (and save some money as well). Does anyone here have any experiences to share?

I got a great answer from Tellurium about the 3.5m minimum rule for the TQ Ultra Black -

"I would very much like to say buy 3.5m (it would be financially better for us) but I understand that modern Naim equipment have varying lengths of our cable attached and we have never had a problem reported to us. Naim obviously know the design parameters of their equipment better than we do so we cannot advise against their recommendation."

which I think is fair.  It would seem that no one, including TQ, has anything going wrong with shorter lengths - but that obviously doesn't preclude the possibility.

If I go ahead and end up toasting my NAP100, I'll let everyone know!  It'll be my excuse to get that NAP 250.2.

I like your spirit of adventure!

And it would be a brilliant excuse!

I take your point Huge. I'll buy an LCR meter and let you know!

Tweed, that reply from Tellurium is a cop-out.

Basically they are saying, "Naim say 3.5m for their cable, but you're on your own with our cable.  All we can say is that no one has had a problem but we don't know it anyone has tested it properly".

I believe they do know more that they say in that answer.

If I remember rightly it may well say in the NAP100 manual somewhere that other cables are safe to use but they still thing naca5 is better - or words to that effect.  There are loads of people on here running TQ speaker cables and not one report of a problem that I have seen. Quite frankly, with my SN2 it is superb

My local dealer knows the clever gentleman who invented TQ cables, if their was any hint of a speaker cable length  issue on some equipment , they would make it known.

If they were honest enough to publish the electrical specs for their cable we'd be able to answer this question.

Without that information any answer is a guess.

Without speaking out of turn, it's safe to say that the TQ designer has a sufficiently adequate understanding of Naim power amplifier topology to advise on issues of compatibility.

Agreed! CW is a genius!

Yep.

BTW TQ always used to have the LCR data on their website. When i bought my TQ cables a few years back i found it wasn't that far off the Naim cable specs to be concerned. I'm not sure why it was removed from the site.

You don't  need to be too clever to work out the ball park L&C,  enter the conductor size, spacing & configuration plus the insulation material into a www calculator  ..........  like you say,  not that far away from NACA5.    Its a shame TQ try to shroud their stuff in this secrecy facade.

So, I got a pair of 1.5m TQ UBs on loan, and had a chance to try them over the last 3 days on both my SU/Focal 926 and NAP100/Neat SX1.    No sign of any noticeable internal temperature changes.  More importantly, they sound amazing. Bags of non-fatiguing detail and smooth, controlled bass even in my small media room which had a tendency for boominess.

Shorter lengths of TQ - worked just fine for me.

Thanks all!

Great news Tweed. I guess the cables won't be going back then?

Posted on: 18 February 2016 by Tweed1234

You're right! I think I may have to postpone my power amp purchase for now (which was also on loan). I might even go so far to say the 1.5m TQ UBs made more of a difference than the s/h NAP250.2, and for a fraction of the cost (not a good comparison of course, but is what I'm telling myself now).

Great result. The TQ Ultra Blue is very good value without getting into silly prices. Enjoy.

I wouldn't go shorter than 3m or 3.5m, just to be on the safe side. Nor would I use TQB with Naim speakers.

I'm using TQB to great effect with Ovator S-400...

Perhaps I should have said 'proper Naim speakers'

My Revels love being feed through TQ black. Ultra Black sounded so much better. I'll get set one day, unless I can afford Black Diamond of course!

Me too, tried A5 and TQ Black back to back with my S-400's and the TQ won hands down. I still have the A5 so it was all about which sounds best to me.
