Music For Cats

Posted by: Mike-B on 11 February 2016

David Teie, a cellist for the National Symphony Orchestra, has studied what sounds cats prefer and composed music just for them.   http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-35529284
Our old moggy "Miff" was very aware of music, she  would always leave the room when DSOTM started,  she would sit up & listen to the heart beats & leave the room before the alarm clocks,  but would come back in after they finished.
Sadly we no longer have a cat because - now retired - we need the freedom for times away from home travelling.   I know many forum'ites are cat people,  so how about your cat music stories.

I had a cat that only had ears for the sound of my voice. If I was in a talkative situation and was sitting down the cat would always make a quick dash to be on top of my chest, so to feel it as well as hear it..  Though I never sang to it , might of put it off.

Slow jazz always cats them. LOL.
Nothing more relaxing than sleeping cats in the room.

One of our cats, sadly no longer with us, when a small kitten disappeared inside the KEF speaker, the hole described as "contoured low frequency duct".  She only did it once, and we got her out before the music was turned on and no damage was done either to kitten or speaker fortunately!  KEF Reference 104.2.  A picture can be seen on KEF's website of the speaker (not of the kitten)

I got a rescue cat 4 years ago.I just lost 2 sister cats that where 12 years old  dying a month apart. She was the last cat I saw in the rescue centre All the other cats I saw I was a bit indifearant about.I always remember she loved her head stroked. She had had a sad life. She went to the centre with her Mum and sister when she was a year old and saw them re homed quickly she then stayed at the centre a year and a half only to be re homed. She escaped the next day and lived on the street for 6 months, only to return to the rescue centre as she was microchipped. She the stayed there for another 6 months until I got her.

I always remember her coming in the lounge for the first time and hearing music coming out of my Quad 2805 electrostatics and she wasn't at all distressed.Think she thought it was interesting this new sound !

Funny she doesn't go near my systems in terms of climbing up my Focal floorstanders or sitting on the LP12.Having said that I do keep the lid of the Linn down.Wouldn't want a bent Ittok coming back in from work !

So nice to give an animal a loving home where she's got !oads of space and a catflap and alleyways to explore. But she is blessed with majestic sound from radio 3 @ 4 on the 01.She hardly uses the catflap anymore as I trust her with her own key !

The cat in my Avater sadly died but Florance is the black and white one in my profile.Love cats always have.

Our last cat definitely had a liking for Luther Van Dross, I know cats don't find it hard to nap, but he'd be asleep as soon as the needle hit the groove. On the other hand he hated most classical music, he's sit glaring at me with his ears pinned back.

One of our other cats loved to listen to a particular Billy Cobham track, the track basically consisted of percussion sounds sweeping across the sound stage from left to right and right to left. He'd jump on the floor, sit between the speakers and move his head following the sound from speaker to speaker. Although he was an extremely intelligent cat, he used to rattle the letterbox when he wanted to be let in the house.

Mi first feline - an ink black kitten - used to come in my room when I played the piano, sit on one arm of my armchair and listen to it until I finished. Then she resumed her activities.

I can't remember much of her taste in recorded matters.

Our Devon Rex likes listening to music from our NDS but completely ignores anything from the TV (played back through the same system).  Has made me wonder whether the quality of the sound or frequency range has something to do with it given that cats can hear up to 60Khz.

She'll sit on the table or a chair for up to 10-15 minutes listening, swivelling her ears around.  I'd love to know what she's thinking.  Probably "PRaT's improved since last year".

One of my cats was seriously freaked out when my Superuniti spontaneously turned itself on at full volume after a firmware upgrade, but frankly, so was I. Normally, they are too lazy to leave the room if I wind up the volume, although you can sometimes see them putting their ears back when the treble gets loud. They do tend to leave when the DSOTM alarm clocks go off, but that's not music, is it?

Mainly, they see the HiFi as a heat source and like to go to sleep on it.

Frieda relaxes to Klaus Schulze "X"

It's of no coincidence the cats often flop-out on the carpet sweet-spot.

Where would the world be without cats? : )
