XPSDR an upgrade to the Nac 272 analog inputs?
Posted by: MangoMonkey on 11 February 2016
Does a XPS-DR provide an upgrade to the Preamp section of the nac 272?
Say for a vinyl source?
Or is it an upgrade just to the streamer+dac+ streaming preamp section?
I believe it upgrades both sections - the XPS fully replaced the internal n272 power supply
I've wondered about this myself ,what are the allocation of power supply rails?
A XPS normally powers just a steamer/Cd so what loses out?
The fact that the 272 uses a CD/Streamer supply rather than a Supercap makes me think that the upgrade favours the streamer section
The connection guide indicates that the 272 is no longer powered directly from the mains once an XPS is connected. So it's just as Fernar said.
HH would know!
I don't have anything plugged into my analogue inputs, but adding the XPS bought a huge improvement to FM, as well as the upnp input. Having a massive power supply powering all the bits of the 272 rather than the much smaller built in supply just has to improve everything - I don't see how it could be otherwise.
Yeah, but how much of an upgrade is it for the analog section?
52.6%.
Can you be more accurate?
Well, is it like going from a flat cap to a hicap? Or from hicap to super cap?
Oh. I was thinking just another decimal place!
Goodness me, I don't know, it just makes the system sound miles better. Why not just borrow an XPS and see for yourself?
Finkfan, it's actually 52.8%....
Thanks Wenger. I think it's a worthwhile upgrade with those figures!
Anyone tried a 555 power supply yet?![]()

I am shocked that it the low improvement figure.
Shouldn't the improvement be 110.1515% based on the price of the XPS ?
I've got an XPS (nonDR) on home dem at the moment. I am running a Gyrodec TT into the 272 and it has improved with the addition of the XPS. However, I would say the biggest improvement is with the streaming - upnp from my NAS. Hi Res FLAC files (transcoded on the fly to WAV through Asset) are out of this world.
As a side note, when I bought my 272/250DR I tested exactly the same XPS for a few weeks. When I took it off the system I noticed little change in SQ. However, having put the XPS back into the system in the last couple of days (having had the 272/250 running for 2-3 months) the uplift in SQ is much more in line with many of the other member's findings here.
My 250 DR was days old when I originally tried the XPS, so perhaps it requires some run in time to fully appreciate the benefits of the XPS on the 272??
Either way, there is going to be some very sweet talking to the in house CFO in the coming days!!

Hi Rick, I take it from that comment you have sinned and tried the afore mentioned item? ![]()

Mango, IMO it would probably make a very decent improvement to your Stageline if there was a powered Aux2 socket on the back of your N272.
C.
No powered aux on 272 for stage line I'm afraid. You can't have everything!

Yes to me adding an XPSDR to the 272 make a considerable difference to the pre amp analogue section when using a TT. I have a Michell Gyrodec and when you take out the XPS the whole presentation becomes far less engaging, it is still very good but it lacks some of the dynamics, clarity, insight and sparkle the soundstage is also greatly reduced. I guess a lot will be down to what phono stage is being used and how revealing it is as this could potentially become a bottleneck.
If possible get a dem and you will soon be able to decide for yourself.

Hi Hilz
tried would be putting it mildly as I've used a 555 DR PS to supercharge the NAC-N 272 at every opportunity I've had over the last few months ![]()
