Naim App + Asset UPnP

Posted by: NewNaim16 on 14 February 2016

Greetings – This is my initial post on this forum. I’ve just ordered my first Naim product, a NAC-N 272 Streaming Preamplifier to go with an existing Mac Mini and non-Naim power amplifier. I’ve shortlisted either Asset UPnP server software or JRiver (so in the longer term I can also stream images to a Sony DLNA certified TV) from the Mac Mini.

While waiting for delivery of the NAC-N 272, I’m loading and pre-testing UPnP.  JRiver streams audio and images to the TV fine. However, I can’t get the Naim App (iOS) to recognise the TV or Asset UPnP. I've temporarily loaded Kinsky on the iPad and seen my music files via Asset but again no TV. My question is should the Naim App be able to recognise the TV or is it expecting some kind of Naim handshake?

I prefer just one iOS control app but don’t know if JRemote plays happily with the Naim or if it would be better to dedicate the Naim App for audio. I did a forum search and checked the FAQ noting some previous issues but the last forum post I found was in 2013. Any inputs gratefully received.

Naim App will recognise Naim devices - it will not 'see' your Sony TV.

Is there any reason why MacMini rather than a dedicated NAS? N272 is a serious piece of kit.
Another thing - start saving for a Naim amp

I've not had a lot of luck with JRiver and JRemote using the UPnP connection between my MacBook and SuperUniti.  I get big delays (up to 40 seconds) in JRemote refreshing, particularly after track changes, and there is an ongoing bug with JRiver crashing on quit after playback through DLNA devices.  I think others are using it without problems though.

Asset UPnP with the Naim app is much more reliable, but at the moment I've settled on MinimServer which is very configurable.  I'd recommend trying this as well if you've not done so.  Asset and MinimServer support are both very good.

Oh, oh - so the Naim App won't 'see' my Sony TV. Thanks Adam that explains matters. I'll rest easy on that point now.

The Mac Mini is in stock and has been doing great job feeding now retired and rather mature Arcam BB3 DAC. I expect it should be fine as a WiFi streaming source. Similarly the LK280+Spark is in stock but I've gotta start somewhere - it may sound okay but I'll know when I get the Naim 272.

Thanks for your help. BTW, where's the 'quote' feature on the forum - I see 'take action' but what action is that?

Thanks very much.

Thanks for your comments ChrisByrd. Given your experience and that from some older posts, I'll initially focus on Asset UPnP with the Naim app when my Naim 272 arrives and take a look at MinimServer too. If I can subsequently get JRiver working reliably, it'll be very useful for images on the TV though. This is all very helpful to save me wasting time spinning my wheels.

When I know how, I'll use the 'quote' feature!

Thanks much.

Will do Adam and thanks for telling me where the 'quote' function was lurking. I'll let you all know how it pans out when the new kit is installed and holler if I need any more help. I do recognise this is potentially the beginning of a slippery slope though. New power amp, speakers, etc ...

Do not fret - we will guide you through.

If you post a new topic on streaming, do so in the 'Streaming Audio' and it will be picked up rather quickly. Loads of expertise lurking in the wildernes of this forum.

MinimServer is particularly good when it comes to organising classical music, but Asset has its own advantage, such as playing history (which I think is planned for MinimServer) and dynamic browsing.  I use JRiver to organise my library, so it would be nice to use it for playback as well.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

By way of an update, the NAC-N 272 is up and running with Asset UPnP server on the Mac Mini. We’ve borrowed a NAP 180 but have new 250 DR on order. Subject to a home audition to confirm, the speaker of choice is Focal Aria 926, with Tellurium Q Black cable.

The only downside was the demo of the XPS power supply ;-)  What an amazing incremental upgrade, we'd never have believed how much it improves things without hearing for ourselves. We’re glad to have heard it but won’t be considering one just yet!
