Transparent cable for Qute/Harbeth

Posted by: Chrissw19 on 17 February 2016

Hello to all,

I'm looking for some feedback on Transparent Audio 14-2 speakers cables. I have ordered some Harbeth P3ESR for a Unitiqute. I asked the dealer about the Linn K20 (budget is tight) but they are pushing for the Transparent and I have never heard about them.

Comments welcome.

Thanks

I have only very limited experience wit Transparent, having used it recently in a large Audio research system where it worked very well. However, that was the top end (i.e. 4 figures for an IEC cable or speaker cable).

Why not consider Naim's own cable? The NACA5 option is still the best for almost any Naim system in my view.

Regards,
Frank.

Hi Frank, I used Naim cables before, but they caused a lot of grief at home. I also need a long run (about 7 meters) which will end-up costing a very large percentage of the  Qute itself once you have added the plugs and soldering.

Get some s/h Linn K20, Cable Talk or Naim A4 (same cable)

Why do you think dealer is pushing ? ($&£ )

Many dealers do offer free speakerwire buying such expensive speakers

@b.lund - many don't!

So Chris, you've decided to buy yourself something really nice and then cobble it together with cable which isn't appropriate. In what way is this sensible? I don't get it. It's a bit like buying a performance car and then only fitting remoulds.

Be that as it may, if you are looking for a discreet cable, then Chord Sarsen is a favourite of mine. Nowhere near the resolution of NACA5 obviously but then it's less than a third the price and it's the most discreet looking cable I know. If a little more is in the kitty, then Chord Rumour is a good option too.

Regards,
Frank.

One option ... initially get yourself some VanDamme 2.5mm blue and some Deltron banana plugs (from the infamous auction site or elsewhere).  These will get you going until you have some more to spend on cabling.  Then when you have something to spend on cables, demo some alternatives and see if YOU think there is an improvement.

I've tried a couple of Chord cables - Rumour and Odyssey - and found them very nice but a bit uninvolving. Tellurium black is very good, but will be too pricey. However, the cheaper Blue is supposed to be very good, and a 7m pair will be £273. They are nice and floppy, unlike the rod-like A5.

Guys

I'm not understanding, especially you Frank. I didn't think the Qute was cable sensitive like some of the Classic series amps. If I'm right in that regard why would the Transparent be a problem? I have heard Transparent used with various Naim integrated and, though I only listened casually, it sounded quite good to me. Very well made at all levels although the pricing at the high end will take your breath away. Happy to be corrected if I'm mistaken on the cable matching issue but a dealer recommendation of Transparent does not seem a problem to me. We all have preferences.

Plenty of margin to create a happy closing of a deal, its a win/win

Now the doubt is out and could result missing that particular future customer

Thanks, that will be an interesting one to try. I will start with some "affordable" qed cables and when the speakers have a good amount of hours on them I will try to do a home demo.

That's a really good idea. Though unfashionable, 79 strand is a very good cable. Don't forget that if you buy used cables for a good price secondhand, you can sell them on at little or no loss if you don't like them. For example, I bought £400 worth of TQB for £125, and later sold them for the same. There are a few Hifi sites where lots of people sell great condition equipment.
