Dubrovnik?

Posted by: Bruce Woodhouse on 17 February 2016

We have had a rough few months at home for various reasons so we have decided to have a European break in May. We are obviously not short of options but wondered if anyone had experience of Dubrovnik and environs? Always looked appealing to me, may be warming up a bit by then and looks like the area surrounding could easily fill 4-5 days. We can also go direct from Leeds Bradford which is a significant plus. We hate airports/flying generally; this will be the second time only we have flown in 15 years as our usual foreign trips are by train/boat.

Anyone been and have tips or experiences to share?

I have only been for a day trip as part of a Med cruise a few years back. But it was a delightful place and we didn't have time to see very much - so should be good for a few days.

I recall a Franciscan Monastery with a significant statute but can't recall who's statute. I also recall there was the world's oldest pharmacy, so a touch of "busman's holiday" in your case. An historic fountain and a Gothic Palace all well worth a visit.

And of course lots of tempting little restaurants and cafes in the narrow cobbles side streets. It is a 12th centuary walled city after all !

I'm sure others will give you more up-to-date info than me, but I thought it was a really delightful place.

The two other places we would like to visit again are Venice (well, Mrs D would) and Athens (Mrs D isn't so bothered, but I must have visited it more than 50 times on business, and never tired of walking through Placa and up to the Acropolis.

We had 8 days there last year early June with our 2 adult daughters. Rented a small place in the old town and didn't hire a car which turned out brilliantly because a) you can go anywhere by boat or bus b) there is nowhere to park anyway. Everyone speaks English (good English), food and wine is excellent. Expensive by local standards, about on a par with UK outside London. Would love to go back. Highly recommended.

Plan for some boat trips to surrounding islands.

Thanks all. Islands and a bit of sea canoeing on the menu I think. We have active holidays.

Booked and sorted!

And stick to local wines They are all superb

For wines look for reds made from grapes  Plavac Mali and/or Tribidrag (aka Zinfandel,  aka Primitivo) and whites from Pošip. Chardonnay also doing well. Best (one of) producers is Grgich (Mike Grgich also makes [excellent] wine in California).

Dubrovnik is a very special place.

Thanks for the tips but our wine consumption is rather low.

One half bottle dessert wine at Xmas just about covers it. It takes us most of the week to drink that.

Dubrovnik is a beautiful City which is great to visit but not a place I would stay.  Cavtat is just down the coast and is stunningly pretty, a lovely port town with fab buildings and millionaire yachts to view from great restaurants. You can get a bus or boat into Dubrovnik for a few pounds.

As an alternative, if you stay in the old town, Prague is absolutely beautiful with astonishing architecture, lovely friendly people and loads and loads to see and do. Some good restaurants too.  Stay away from the new town though.  Probably my favourite European city.  Edit, it's a really really cheap place for food and drink too but has high end shopping to die for  - Croatia is more expensive

A couple of things...

1. Anything described as a beach in / around Dubrovnik probably isn't much more than a handful of pebbles

2. Good walk round the walls of the old city

3. Pleasant boat trips

4. Cable car to the top of the mountain gives good views

5. Pretty easy to walk to almost any part, and the buses are easy to use if not.
