Focal Scala Utopia v2s have arrived

Posted by: DaveBk on 18 February 2016

Well, the title says it all really.... The big boys have arrived and the run in process has begun. Straight out of the box they are pretty stunning and prove the Naim - Focal marriage can produce some excellent offspring. I thought the S600s were the end of the journey, but these babies build on the strengths of the Ovator and deliver so much more. Much more to come I suspect. Thanks to James and Henry of Tom Tom Audio for the hard work this afternoon!

Pics! We want pics!

Enjoy Dave, we heard them at the Audiobarn last year. They were probably the best Naim Focal combination we have heard.

And a closeup. The cabinet finish is really excellent, although it does seem to act as a dust magnet!

Overall, I'm very pleased indeed!

Congrats! Those look nice!

Dave,

Size wise are they significantly bigger than S600s?

Shame they don't have an active option

Posted on: 19 February 2016 by DaveBk

Hi Graham,

Deeper and wider, but not much taller. Weigh about 30Kg more though, so definitely a 2 man job. Packing boxes are HUGE!

Looks like a proper speaker and so much nicer than the Sopra 2s.   Those beryllium tweeters will need something better than Naca5.

Posted on: 19 February 2016 by Graham Clarke

Dave's already using Super Lumina cable I believe rather than NAC A5.

Posted on: 19 February 2016 by TOBYJUG

Oh yes , I think I can see from the first photo. Not as rigid as Naca and slimmer,   Dave's not so bad looking either.

They look quite substantial Dave. I'll bet you'll have fun breaking them in!

Enjoy

Posted on: 19 February 2016 by DaveBk

Yup, SL cables throughout now. They are very substantial, and based on a few hours run in while I was working also very capable. I was a bit worried they would be too bright for this current room, but the sound is very balanced. Extremely detailed and transparent, with a very clean mid-band and loads of bass slam. In room response down to 24Hz.

More listening planned tonight. Much fun ahead I think!

Congrats....they look stunning....enjoy. I have the Sopra2's which require about 180 hrs break in time, is it the same with the Scala Utopia v2s?

Hi Dave, I'm from across the Pond, just want to congratulate you on those stunning Speakers!

Everyone on the Forum knows Focal can push the Envelope, as it pertains to Speakers.

Just curious, are the v2s a two, or three way  design?

Focal wouldn't have any problems marketing an Active version of these creatures!!!!!

Enjoy your Music!!!!

The Armchair QB!!!!

They're a 3 way. And yup, I suspect they could sell a few Active pairs... Graham's got his cheque book at the ready!

Looks brilliant, have fun and please give us some report!

A very good looking speaker to these eyes.

Terrific pictures, Dave. I particularly like the second one looking down the listening room towards the Scalas. The speakers, room decor, flooring, rug etc - it all looks absolutely stunning! I very much hope that the performance is as good as they look.

Do keep us posted as they run in.

Wow they look Stunning Dave along with the rest of the room and set-up, congratulations Enjoy!

Look stunning. Sure you will be just as happy with the way they sound as I am with mine. If ever get the chance try them with Stillpoint ultra 5s. A good upgrade!

Dave...?  Dave...?  Anyone seen Dave?

Not sure what's more impressive the gorgeous piano black speakers (IMO piano black always looks fantastic) or the new look Mr Burke!

What I am curious about is which sounds better, active S600s with NAP 300s or much more expensive speakers (well these are nearly 3x the price of S600s aren't they?) driven passively with something like a NAP500?  I know they will sound different due to the active/passive differences.

I'd be keen to hear your thoughts Dave once they're nicely run in.
