Naim ARO - fishing line query

Posted by: John3 on 19 February 2016

The anti-skating fishing line and weight has become detached from its spindle. I am having real problems getting it back on (eyesight not what it was and shaky hands). My question is, assuming I can get it back on the spindle, which notch should it be placed on? I seem to remember it was on the end notch but if so I can see it falling off again too easily.

See paragraph 4 below:

I have mine 2nd from the outside with either 17D3 or Proteus, this notch sounded liveliest to me.

Where it is best placed on the rod will depend on how much anti skate bias force is needed.  More is applied the further out it is attached on the rod.

A useful tool here is an unmodulated LP - i.e. one that has no grooves.  Setting the bias compensation so that the stylus tracks in one place rather than skating one way or another across such an LP greatly helps as a "reference".  Actually tracking a groove will be slightly different, but not much, so tiny adjustment by ear can then be done for a near-perfect bias compensation setting.

Thanks all - there is obviously more to this than I thought. I have a 17D3 too but will check the bias.

The bias device seems very fragile and I wondered therefore if Naim carried spares in the event of breakage?

Check with the factory. Naim does not carry many ARO parts any longer.

I am looking for the plastic mini plug. Alas, I was told no more.

If you mean the connector plug, it would be worth enquiringly with Peter Swain. When he fitted the Urika to my LP12 he installed a new socket in the arm board. I assume if there is a firm making the socket, it's more than likely that it makes the plug too.

Actually when it's located on the inner grooves and the arm is on the rest the fishing line is at a very acute angle and looks most likely to slip off. Mine was on the third notch and it slipped off from there. I've now put in on the second notch out, which although at a more acute angle, doesn't sound 'wrong' and I've not had any jumping.

Fantastic! I would love to buy a LP12/Aro/Armageddon Amy day of the week but they are hard to find

John3,

I use a Dynavector DV-20X2 in my Aro. Peter of Cymbiosis recommended the following:

"Yes John I use 1.95g and the anti-skate weight wants to be on the penultimate notch which if you look at the manual corresponds to 2.25g. The Aro is slightly under-calibrated in my opinion."

DV17D3 similar tracking weight I think.

Take your time. Hope that helps.

John.

I prefer no anti skate I'm convinced the Aro sounds better without, I use a XX2 it could be a cartridge thing and a phonosophie tt

Yeah. that's it. This black plug that goes in to the arm board.

Good thing Peter still has a few. The problem is that the company who made them no longer make the parts.

I will give him a shout to see if he found a possible NOS source.

Mine keeps going bad and AV Options no longer has the part.  ( apparently I  used up all of his supply )

Well I have managed to get it back on the notched spindle without breaking anything. It's on the 3rd notch from the end so it is 2.00g which will do me for now as it is nerve wracking to move - I'll quit while I'm ahead.
