NAP 200 hot and cut out......

Posted by: meaculpa on 20 February 2016

Just listening at low levels through my NDX which runs through a NAC 202 & NAP 200, when the music stopped.  Both the 202 & 200 were dead, and when I touched the 200 it was almost too hot to hold my hand on.  This had obviously tripped or fused the the 200 hence the 202 being out too.

I have checked for a speaker shorting out, but looks ok.  I guess this is a trip back to Salisbury for the 200.

Anyone else had any issues?  The 200 is about 8 years old.

Could it not be the thermal protection tripping it? Used to often sit with a cold hair dryer cooling my first naim when the thermal protection switched it off.

Which speaker cable do you use?

hopefully just the thermal cut out.  Leave it for a half an hour and it should start up again.  However, before doing so, check for any fine strands shorting from speaker cabling.

However, it should not be getting so hot unless present with a very low impedance speaker or going into instability due to inappropriate or faulty speaker cabling.  What speaker cable, termination and length are you using?

I feel a real klutz now!  Re-checked speaker cables (NAC5) and one of the plugs had popped out and was touching metal back panel of crossover.....hence a short.

I will just let it all cool down....check plug fuse and then see.  Is there a cutout reset or do you just let it cool?  I have read somewhere that there are also internal fuses.  I hope I have not done too much damage.

Thank you for the post in answer and apologies for not checking the connections properly before posting...

Thank you Richard.  Has just come back on ok, and all appears fine.

Christopher,

Very tardy I am afraid, and still with RS8's, although given this evenings events, they could have been history!  I did audition at Chandlers Ford and  PMC 20.23's were fabulous and closest to what I was looking for.  Just now justifying the cost in line with all the other household priorities!

Thanks for explaining, and glad the NAP has come back to life.
