Velodyne DD10+ sub ..... findings

Posted by: Richieroo on 22 February 2016

Hi all my system is as follows... 272,250.2 with PMC 20.21 and Velodyne DD10+  Sub.... the sub is a recent addition - I was concerned that I may effect the overall musicality .... by adding a sub. Mine is connected to the pre amp out - I did not want to effect the power amp/speaker relationship.

This little meteorite of a sub worked brilliantly... I was able to dial it in via room eq and a touch of manual tweaking - to roll in seamlessly and when i say seamless it really is. I have been astonished by the integration.... speed and power - and tunefulness. I know many on the Naim forum will snear at this ... but I speak as  find.  I tried a Rel S3  ... this was dire .... and had huge effects - which for me were all negative.

I really think the DD10+ is a bit special ...... I not sure the bigger ones would be quick enough (12,15,18). I also think the little PMC are a match made in heaven. I suspect  the controlled - dry rolled of base of the PMC's is critical.

I now play the system at lower volume levels - the mid band appears more expansive and the treble a touch sweeter. My next upgrade is to DR the 250.2....this is a mouth watering prospect.

Good subs, the Velodynes. A few years ago I had a pair of DD15s for home cinema use (I've a large room) & they were most impressive. The on-board room eq was a real revelation & it was fascinating to see the effect on the room caused by a simple thing such as leaving a door open.

I did try them with the stereo (well, you've got to, haven't you?) and was pleasantly surprised but as you point out they were a bit too slow for that purpose. The nSubs I replaced them with were far better for music but, boy, did those Velodynes kick ass!

Hi mine is mono ..... I have the 10 inch sub .... it is so fast and tuneful. I am sure stereo would be better but cash and space strapped. I use my setup as a super posh 2.1 system for small computer den .... works great on games and youtube etc.

I am now going for the 250 DR upgrade ...... then ultimately a powerline then funds permitting SL speaker cable way in furture..... phew...

I think the DD18+ would be real fun ...... I think a pair of them should come with a health warning!

I posted because I think most Naim users shun .... subs ....as they have a reputation for being boom boxes....0 to boomy in 5 seconds! But in truth with the right kit it can be a win win ........ and those last couple of octaves make such a difference. Oh regarding Rel, for me it did not work .... but I am sure with the right room patience and tuning they can work .... for me the Velodyne DD+range with EQ was fantastic - but expensive!!!

Cheers

It's all about tuning subs correctly. Folk seem to want to "hear" them so tend to turn them up too loud. My subs weren't stereo, just dual-mono.
