Servicing

Posted by: Damo66 on 22 February 2016

Hi Everyone

I've been lurking around the Forum for a while but this is my first post....

please be gentle.

I have a couple of questions regarding the service of Naim kit please.

After service, are items returned basically functioning as if they were brand new?

Is there any advantage in returning the kit to Naim HQ for service as opposed to using Naim Approved Service Centres?

would there be any difference in the work carried out?

Thanks

PS I'm in the UK.

Hi DAM066

Welcome to the forum!

The answer to your first question is yes.  Working perfectly, but for older kit (say 8 years old or more) you could also opt to have a more fundamental service which changes items like all the electrolytic capacitors that may be working ok but are near the end of their lives. Naim won't take care of (or charge you for) purely cosmetic issues unless you ask them to.

Regarding the second question, I think most people in the UK would use Naim for servicing. But if there are any approved service centres here (are there?) , then I imagine it comes down to convenience basically. For very simple things, some of the dealers can help, so I suggest talk to a proper Naim dealer about your problem.

best

I have previously used both Naim and one of their service centres for servicing of my "Olive" 250 amps.
"Class A' in Sheffield offer the same level of service, using the same parts actually obtained directly from Naim.

The main difference I found was that "Class A" were able to offer me a faster turn-around for the service. Less time for me without my amps :-)

I'd contact both companies and ask how quickly they can do the service, their price, terms and conditions, including carriage costs to and from them.

If you're referring to servicing something such as an AV2 Surround Processor or one of the streamers, I believe Naim are your only real option as those products are so specialised.

Thanks Gents,

The equipment I'd want looked at is a Nait 5 (2003 iirc). It seems to be working fine but at over 12 years old it might benefit from a service.

I've  heard of Class A but didn't know if it was OK to mention 3rd parties on here? Guess it's alright if they are Naim Approved?

Class A is run by Darran from the premises of the Sheffield Naim dealer Moorgate Acoustics.

Class A is a Naim authorised service agent and uses kits of parts supplied by Naim.

The advantage of sending your amp to Naim is that they will have an official log of the work done on your amp.

The advantages of Class A are twofold: faster turnaround (my 135s were serviced in half a day versus circa 3 weeks with Naim) , and noticeably lower price.  The quality of workmanship is equally high (from my experience).

Hope this helps, FT
