Album art - is there a specification on this ?

Posted by: engjoo on 01 March 2016

It has been 3 years since I got my NDX and to be honest, I have been struggling to understand album art requirements.

Despite following the rules (ie getting the file name folder.jpg and having my upnp server set to display it), some album art just do not show. Is it a matter of size or resolution ? I have not seen such definitions before.

For the record, I am using Synology NAS with the latest DSM and Media Server package. Have tried setting display low res image and still doesn't work on some.

Max resolution 1250 x 1250.

The name must be folder.jpg, and please note that the image must originate as a JPG file. Otherwise there seem to be problems with displaying the artwork.

Yes my max resolution do not exceed 1250x1250.

Question:

1) Does it have to be of a specific aspect ratio (ie 1x1)

2) What about DPI ?

No - it does not need to be square,

Maximum DPI = 1250 x 1250.

Have you tried deleting a cover which fails to display and loading a new one?

Posted on: 01 March 2016 by Mike-B

On the Browser Settings page & Filenames line - the album art must be a .jpg (sometimes its comes with downloads as a .pdf) & called "cover" or "folder" & spelt correctly.  I have that line spelt in different ways to be sure as it can be supplied differently & this saves the bother of it not working  - copy/paste this  ..........  cover.jpg;Cover.jpg;COVER.jpg;folder.jpg;Folder.jpg;FOLDER.jpg.

Are you OK working with the metadata to change or keep art either from the album or www ??

Posted on: 01 March 2016 by Adam Zielinski

Coreection to my post above.

DPI is of course something else than a size. But ultimately they lead to the same thing - resolution.

NAIM streaming is focused on the maximum allowable size, as measured in pixels. Hence the 1250 x 1250 rule.

Ive ripped in wav using xld on mac. I transfer the files once ripped to a synology nas using the latest dsm media server.

For some reason it never recognises the artwork or artist, even though when performing the rip it collects the information correctly. I have looked at the settings in both xld and dsm and cant seem to find a solution.

A friend has used dbpoweramp to rip a few for me and this transfers all the metadata perfectly, the trouble is that I really dont want to have to rip a thousand cd's again. The track listing always displays correctly with the xld rips.

Sorry to jump in on your thread engjoo but im stuck with a similar problem and both Adam and Mike seem very knowledgeable so may be able to help us both.

While this doesn't fix the issue in the Synology media player per se, you could try loading MinimServer to see if that works. All my music is in FLAC, which seems much easier to work with. Perhaps you could make a FLAC copy of one WAV album and see if the art appears. Don't forget to rescan afterwards, and to clear the two caches via the Naim app.

Mr Happy

Could you try the following:

  1. Identify an album which fails to display the artwork
  2. Go to the server and manually delete the artwork file
  3. Look up the artwork on-line - make sure its file extension is .JPG (nothing else but JPG) and the resolution does not exceed 1250 x 1250 pixels
  4. Download the image to your PC
  5. Rename the file as folder.jpg
  6. Upload the new cover art to your server, to an album folder (from point 1 above)
  7. Get your NAS / Server software to re-scan the directory where your music is stored
  8. Go to your iPad (or other tablet) that you use for controlling your NAIM streamer and 'Clear image cache' (top right corner for Settings > Other Settings > Clear image cache)
  9. The artwork should display now...

Hi hh, I have got minimserver loaded too. It has the same issue. I tried flac before starting ripping my collection but sound quality was better in wav I found, so I ripped everything in wav. I believe metadata in flac was ok if I recall correctly.

Thanks Adam, will give that a try later, except the delete image file, as this hasnt written to the album folder from xld.

Can you use dppoweramp rather than XLD going forward. Certainly in dbpoweramp changing album art can be done at the click of a button - delete the old art, get it to find examples from the web, replace. There's no downloading, re-naming and any other malarkey. What Adam suggests should work, but with dbpoweramp it's far easier.

Posted on: 02 March 2016 by Adam Zielinski

The above is correct. What I've described is a manual way of doing, what dbPoweramp will do automatically.
Since not everyone uses db, the manual process may come in handy.

Using Minim eh  .........  OK disregard my previous post as thats for Syn's native Media Server,  or as you've got it loaded, open it up & get the art right in Media Server,  I found that easier to work with in than in Minim during the time I was trying Minim

Thanks for the help guys, cant wait to get back home and try things out later.

HH, while I know dbpoweramp would have been the right choice from the beginning, it wasnt available for mac at the time. Now ive ripped everything I can lay my hands on im a bit reluctant to buy it for the odd cd I may now purchase.

Mike, I am using the synology dsm server software rather than minimserver as I find the sound quality is very slightly better on dsm.

Thanks to Mr Happy for sharing the tips. Despite doing that, I could not get those album art to work.

I have done further investigation into this by looking at the file and image properties and it seems to me that there is a problem with album art which is 96 DPI (Horizontal Resolution).

I think we are getting there and would really love to get to the bottom of this. Perhaps someone who knows image properties and upnp server requirements can shed more light on this ?

Could this be n-stream or my Synology upnp server?

Ok, ive managed to find a site to download the cover art from, and have downloaded a couple and put them into the album folder. Ive renamed them Folder.jpg, and they are showing in the folder. They are not coming up on the naim app though. Ive cleared the image cache but cant see how to rescan the synology dsm. Maybe this is the problem?

Engjoo, it was the other guys giving us tips. Im every bit as much in the dark as you are . It will be great to get this issue sorted. I feel as if im almost there, but not quite.

Posted on: 03 March 2016 by Adam Zielinski

I would imagine that the Synology has some sort of control app, installed on your PC (my QNAP has).  Typically, I'd look for a media control commands and 'rescan of the library'...

I'm sorry I cannot be of much help with this one - I've never used Synology.

Posted on: 03 March 2016 by hungryhalibut

You said above that you have Minim loaded - try rescanning that and the covers should show. Start Minim via Minimwatch, right click the green icon that appears in the bottom bar, and press rescan. (I suggest this as I don't use DSM so don't know how to rescan it).

To "re-scan" in Synology DSM, do this:

-> Control Panel -> Indexing Service -> Media Indexing -> Re-index

This will take a while depending on the size of your music collection.

Posted on: 03 March 2016 by Mike-B

The Synology with its own Media Server does not need a re-index when a new album is loaded,  but if you change something in a loaded album such as take out an art "folder" & replace it with a different but same name "folder",  then it needs a re-index.

I re-index one in a while as a matter of course,  maybe 2 or 4 times a year.   I also clear both image & UPnP cache's whenever I load a new album  .................  Finally got a download replacement for my worn out LP Cream "Disraeli Gears"  to load later.  £13 for both 96 & 192 from HighResAudio,  £18.88 from Qobuz   (madness)

Posted on: 03 March 2016 by Mr Happy

Now sorted. It seemed to automatically recognise in minimserver but not in synology dsm. I looked through settings and found "show album artwork" switched off. Switched back on and working now. Only a thousand or so covers to download . Still, this time next year........

Next is to find out why the album artist isnt attached to each folder? Ive named the folders so I have an index system but when an album is clicked on it shows the title but underneath says "unknown artist"

Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions. Id never have got there on my own.

Just a correction here ... this is not a NAIM limitation ... this is a DSM Media Server limitation.

Using MinimServer I have artwork which is over 1400x1400 pixels and 2.5MB in size which display with naim App to control streaming.

Posted on: 03 March 2016 by Guy007

When ripping in DBpoweramp you can set the image up to 1400x1400, if you attach an image that is bigger it rescales it to 1400x1400 when saving as the Folder.jpg or attaching into the files.

Maybe Naim need to incorporate some similar logic in their software when presenting the image ? Or increase the res size ?

A quote from the UnitiServe manual:

The CD cover artwork will also be downloaded if available for display by the UnitiServe user interface. Artwork is downloaded and stored at up to 1280 x 1280 pixel resolution for use on UnitiServe interface hardware, such as an iPad and the n-Serve app, able to display high resolution images.

If I might add another correction,  DSM Media Server is not the limiting factor.  I have just had a quick look at albums that I have changed the original art on & the first one I went to has 2400 x 2400 , 4.51MB.
