At my wits end with downloading!!
Posted by: Clive B on 03 March 2016
I am at my wits end with this downloading business! I NEVER have any success with it and usually abandon it and buy the LP or CD instead.
In this case I purchased an LP from the Linn Records website, but it was warped. So I have now downloaded the 24 bit, 192kHz FLAC file. I have dragged the folder into the Downloads folder on the NS01. That was about two hours ago. But it is still not visible on the Naim app or n-serve.
It's visible in the NS01 Downloads folder when I look in Windows Explorer, but it just doesn't show in the Naim app or on n-serve.
Fortunately I do have the LP record, but I would like to be able to play this FLAC file.
How do other people do this? What am I doing wrong?
I can't answer the downloads part Clive, but I'd get Linn to send you a replacement LP in the interim....
Actually Linn gave me the download code instead. Although the LP comes with a download code for CD quality or MP3, they were kind enough to give me the code for a free 24/192 download. Now I cannot work out how to make that work. I have had this trouble every time I have tried downloading high resolution digital files. I am surprised that Naim Audio doesn't provide any instructions how to do this properly; the user is left to find out by trial and error. To be honest, I think these things are too costly to be left to trial and error.
It sounds, Clive, as though your 'downloads' folder isn't activated. Go to Tools, music repositories, scannable network shares in Naim Desktop Client. In there you'll see the folder Downloads alongside your NS01xxxx host. Check that Status says 'online', and Active says 'yes' . If not, then highlight this folder (click on it) and then click 'Activate' on the right hand side of the screen. That'll do it for sure.
After a minute or two, go to Music Library tab and click on (open the) the \\NS01xxx\Downloads folder and open Albums - you should then see the album appear.
Happy days... I hope

PS - once you've activated the download folder, all future files that you copy into there will appear, but only after you've re-scanned the folder ! (or after you've waited a longish while for the NS01 to decide to scan it)
Thanks, I'll have to try that tomorrow. Strangely though I can see other downloads that I have purchased. I'll report back whatever my findings.
Cheers, Clive

How do you rescan the folder?
Again, why doesn't Naim Audio provide any instructions?

Re-scan... in Naim desktop client, Tools tab, music repositories, scannable network shares, click to highlight the downloads folder then click Rescan button on the right hand side of the window. This is a very useful button ! There's also an equivalent for the music store (Rescan store). The NS01 will do this automatically from time to time, but, from time to time, it loses track of music in its shared folders and the rescan is the way to nudge it to re-index the files. Luckily this is a rare occurrance. I have my music stored in 11 shared folders (High definition, MP3, other FLACs, WMA etc etc) so I find a rescan is necessary a little more often than most... but it's still a rare occurance, as I saId.
Note - a rescan can take a while depending on how many files are in the folder ('a while' can be 10 mins to a couple of hours in my setup).
"Bon chance" Clive, as I hear they often say in Salisbury !

I hardly ever do downloads myself because I always find its such a struggle to get the server to see them in the downloads folder. While I have massive respect for Naim and for the technical support service they provide, I must say that I also was amazed at the poor documentation that Naim provides with its servers. I have a Unitiserve and the manual which you can download deals only with the case where you plug a monitor and mouse into the back of the US. The DTC manual is not user friendly either. It all assumes a certain level of knowledge about computers and networks and confidence to experiment which many of Naim's customers won't have (although some will find themselves acquiring it, mostly from this Forum). Rjstaines advice above is extremely welcome. Just knowing that a rescan can take that long is useful because if you have half a dozen albums in the folder, it feels like it should take a few seconds, not minutes or hours!
I do think that there is room for a manual aimed at the general user which is kept up to date and reflects that most people will interact with their Naim servers via an App and may not comfortably reach for a PC and the Windows DTC.
I also wonder why things like triggering a rescan couldn't be done through the n-serve App. But maybe I'll make a suggestion to Naim about that.

I have very few problems with downloads on my readynas used with ns01. I seem to remember something about cover images in certain bitdepths can cause problems?
In correct tags, and the Naim upnp server is very unforgiven about tags that causes no other problems for other servers, can stop an album from appearing at all.
I think the op wrote one file, but I suppose it is a folder with files inside the folder? How was it downloaded, with the Linn downloader or by downloading each track individually?
Finally can you play the tracks on the computer you used when downloading the album?
One or more files could be damaged.

Thanks, Roy. I've checked all that and it's already correct as you say (Status: Online; Active: Yes; Scan Type: Automatic).
i have looked in the Music Library and the album is not listed. It is still there when I look using Windows Explorer.
I have also selected the 'Rescan' switch. How do you tell when the rescan is complete? Is it just when the button becomes live again? N my case that happened after just 15 seconds. Still it's not visible in the music library.
Still at my wits end. I think I'll try a call to Salisbury.
Regards, Clive

Hello Claus,
It is a folder problem, not just an individual file. I cannot see any tracks, nor even the album title on n-serve, the Naim app, nor the DTC. But all are visible in Windows Explorer.
It was downloaded using the Linn downloader. No I cannot play it on the computer because it's FLAC files and my computer has no programme to play these.
I have spoken on the phone with the support team at Naim Audio who suggest it may be a 'tagging' problem. It seems odd that Linn would allow a download with corrupted tags.
I was asked to put the folders in a Drop box and send a link. This I think I have done, but I'm not too hopeful about that either!
I have found in the past that files downloaded using the Linn downloader don't end up organised like Naim likes them. If I remember properly you need an artist folder (which can be the composer for classical) and then a folder within that called Album name and within that you put the files themselves together with the artwork as a jpg called cover.jpg or, some insist but I didn't find it necessary, folder.jpg
The album name for a classical album would be something like "Beethoven - Symphony No 5" or whatever. That way in the album view all the classical albums get listed by composer, and that is how Naim rips are shown.
Anyway it would be good to know what Naim says when they have looked at your tags and how you resolve it.

I solved it myself. Within the folder were three non-music files. These were the booklet (a .pdf file), the cover art (a .png file) and the inlay card (also a .png file). Remembering all the hassle with cover art files in the past, having to have a specific name (folder.jpg) etc. I got to thinking if the problem was the fact that there were two .png files. So, I deleted the inlay card file and, lo and behold, after a rescan (thanks Roy) there it was! If that was indeed the problem, then I am relieved and delighted with my diagnostic skills. Otherwise I was just lucky.
I have commented by email to the support people that if this was the cause of my troubles, then it should be written in some basic user instructions.
I would really like some user instructions.
Well done Clive! Fascinating.
