Mute button flashing problem - NAC 202

Posted by: Vaasa on 08 March 2016

Hi - my first posting so please be gentle as I know this has been covered before but am still struggling.

Have been using an Nait XS for a while but had always fancied trying out a pre/power. Anyhow, I obtained a 150 and at the weekend obtained a second-hand NAC 202 with NAPSC.

All appears to be properly connected, though I could be wrong. However, all I get is the notorious flashing mute button. Looking at earlier threads there is a suggestion that the NAPSC is faulty, but I would like to be sure before contacting the dealer (NAIM registered). What should I be trying?

Thanks

I assume you are powering from the NAP 150 rather than from a Hicap.  In which case, have you got the 5 pin Link plug fitted?

If so, power everything off, remove the link plugs and the NAPSC.  Re-connect, and then power up.

Yes from the NAP and 5 pin link plug. Will give it another bash - cheers

Yes, still flashing - power is flowing throughout the 3 components.

Take the napsc off and replace all link plugs (turn napsc and 150 off first) and try again.

With NAPSC off there is naturally no power getting to the 202? There were a couple of loud pops though!

I will put the NAPSC back in place and fire up again.

Replace the NAPSC with the paddle link.  If all OK then it indicates a NAPSC problem.

Thanks Richard, but don't have a paddle link. The items are clearly not functioning as they should, and I have now contacted the seller for a response.

May be helpful to post a photo(s) of the rear of the 202?

No paddle link for a NAC202 is not clever !  Someone's 'avin' a laugh, as they say.

You need to get this pre back to where it came from as soon as, in my opinion.

Dunno what you paid for it, but there's a few 202's on that famous auction site at the mo. One of them looks particularly good and quite recent... and the photo shows the paddle in place !  (No NAPSC though, but then that's not an essential upgrade, is it?)

Thanks for all the replies - but yes looks like I need the blanking plug (I take it this is the same as the paddle), and I assume that I do not need a Hi-Cap??

Looks like I will put the Nait XS back into position until the plug(s) turn up!

if you have NAPSC you don't need the paddle.

If the mute is flashing, seems like the NAPSC is working fine

You have connected the lead from the Nait XS to the plug below the NAPSC input plug? (it is called standard)

and there needs to be a link plug in the input next the the standard one called upgrade.

Please download the manual and look at the pictures

Congrats on your 202/150 let us know how it compares to the Nait XS

Sorry, yes, this was suggested earlier, but I sort of overlooked it - I patently need the (single) blanking plug. Audio Republic is only a couple of miles away so will see if they can source one unless they fall into the hen's teeth category?

Yep, will eventually do a comparison between the 150/202 and the NAIT XS.

Out of interest, before I had the XS I was using a Cain 4808A (French Class A jobbie), and in fact must have run it for 4 years or so. It sounded absolutely sublime with anything with strings or even dummy strings (e.g. mellotron), however being somewhat lacking in grunt it did struggle to drive many speakers and believe me I've had a few. Anyhow, I obtained a pair of Opera Grand Mezzas just over a year ago and the Cairn really struggled, with the bass in particular being quite boomy. I got the XS last summer and found it to be quite a revelation, although at first I was a little underwhelmed as I initially played a lot of modern jazz  which sounded ok but nothing special. Later on I went back to my rock collection and OMG (as my daughter would say) what a difference. In fact I was playing the Eagles the other night and the naim was making them sound like a heavy metal outfit.
