The fact that a classically trained producer was willing to indulge four young rockers speaks volumes to Martin's musical acumen. He was probably the greatest singular factor on the Beatles' overall sound as a band, no doubt a strong facilitator in the studio, and always regarded as a gentleman. Few, if any record producers are so positively tied to a band as George Martin was to the Beatles - the two names and their credits for success are nearly synonymous. His legacy in the history of recorded music will never be forgotten.

Well yes, but he was house staff at Abbey Road. So was given work to do.

Sad news.      RIP George.        The Beatles still remains my largest "By Artist" music folder & then add those many other bands & orchestras he produced  ..........  some legacy.

And he was a very good bloke: modest, generous, loyal.

Surely he was head of Parlophone - an EMI subsidiary - and wanted to widen the label's repertoire with pop music which was how he came to sign the Beatles. So he took them on; he wasn't given them.

In a year where we have lost some musical giants, this one might be the biggest one yet.

And his contributions went way past the Beatles, although I have always thought of him as the consummate "Fifth Beatle" - in the perfect storm that came together to make the Beatles, he was the musical eye of the hurricane.  As great as they were, they wouldn't have been as great without George Martin.

George Martin certainly produced some memorable classical recordings for Parlophone, including Mozart Violin Concertos played by the [former] leader of the Berlin Philharmonic, Szymon Goldberg, with the Philharmonia under Walter Susskind. About 1954 in Abbey Road Number One Studio.

A recording wonderful in every way.

RIP George Martin.

Sad news indeed, sophisticated, forward thinking and we probably don't even know the half of him, just his studio work. Tho I think his guiding the Beatles is what he'll forever be known for and god bless him for that.  He let them run to create their own magic.

The Beatles would have been a great band without him. With him, they were a phenomenon that changed the world and gave pleasure to millions of people, and will continue to do so. There's a showing of "Produced by George Martin" on BBC 4 later tonight.
