Superb ensemble cast and gripping drama lightened with moments of wry comedy - TV at its best.

It is well made and we do watch it. It's just bloody depressing!

Depressing is the key word IMHO. I gave up watching it part way through the first series.

Mrs D watches it, but then she has plenty experience coping with her depression ie she has to put up with me

I also find Sarah Lancashire seems to play rather depressing characters quite a lot, and she does it quite well. As if it all come naturally.

+1

Brilliantly acted by an excellent cast with a story line worth following over and above the dross of so called drama on other channels whereby the storey is stretched over far more episodes than needed only for the protagonist to turn up "left of stage" in the last ten minutes of the last episode of too many and then claimed to a be real thriller!!!!!!!!

Did you notice in the restaurant with the Abba tribute band, the very booming tuneless bass notes typical of PA systems. It fair made the double dual cones on the Chimeras really shift.

I thought the first series was one of the best things on telly last year, even if it was very violent. Only up to Ep3 on this series, but again it has been outstanding. Sarah Lancashire is an incrediblke actress and Catherine Cawood is one of the best characters of the past few years.

Great bit of drama.

The role reversal on the bridge parapet was genius tragicomedy - 'Do you have any children?' Noooooo!

I watched the final episode last night. Brilliant. There are those who think the BBC no longer produce good TV drama...

Season 2 now available on US Netflix!

Careful, it's even more grim than S1...

Gritty stuff with extreme emotions thrown in - excellent.  Only one snag why is the awful silly american song fronting a British Northern Drama?

Jake Bugg is British.

Made by the team which makes (made?) Scott and Bailey - the one ITV programme I actually watched. Much to my other half's bemusement.

Very well done - good story lines and fine acting led by the very impressive Sarah Lancashire! Looking forward to Season 3!

Grim and utterly gripping. I'm almost through season 2, and rewatching season 1 with my better half (in French, her first language), after hounding her to give it a go. The French dubbing is very good, but makes the series less depressing, removing some of its bite. Tommy Lee Royce with a well enunciated French accent is a bit odd though...
