Electric Blues recommendations

Posted by: Brian Dodson on 11 June 2011

Hi all,

Looking for any recommendations for good electric blues. Music that would be at home at Eric Clapton's guitar festivals for example.

Thanks!

Thanks everybody.  I've heard of a lot of the names mentioned, some of them are new. I'll check some out.

I've listened to some on youtube. Anywhere else people like to listen to get ideas?

One of the greatest blues guitarists of all-time, certainly one of the very best living now, is Robben Ford.

For anyone interested in the origins of Chicago electric blues (Buddy Guy,, Junior Walker, Otis Rush, Otis Spann, J.B. Hutto, etc.) can't miss with this 3-CD set (for $15 US ... such a deal!).

But the winner is - Aussie blues outfit Bondi Cigars, my most played double set ever.

Bazz

Never heard of the bondi cigars, so i googled:

Usually found in the waters of Bondi Beach, Sydney, Australia, the Bondi Cigar is excrement, usually human, that inhabits the waters seeking out victim swimmers to bump into. The excrement usually resembles a brown cigar, hence the name, although a wide variety of shapes and sizes have been known to exist. Swimming into one of these cigars is usually an unpleasant experience and can leave the victim in a state of shock. Bondi Cigars are usually serial offenders who prowl the Sydney waterways looking for unsuspecting interstate/international tourists which to assault.

Now i know i need to check these guys out!

For me the Black Keys. Seen them at Rock City, Nottingham about four years ago.  They're only just getting the recognition they deserve.

Yeah, comes from the days before Sydney had proper sewage treatment works, erk!! Also known as Blind Mullet.

Shane Pacey and the boys have been around for a long time, saw them live recently and they were fantastic. Love the two lead guitar concept, with Eben Hale the other guitarist, well worth checking out.

32 Premium Quality Cuts gives a good overview, but the individual albums are all good, Bad Weather Blues, 12 Lies, Mercy, the list goes on.

Amazed at no mention of Roy Buchanan!

Some good recommendations here. Someone mentioned Robben Ford who, whilst good on his own, comes alive in the presence of Larry Carlton. Buy this album!

And then if you like that, buy this:

Both astonishingly good albums! Check both pairings out on Youtube.

Spent ages typing out a reply for it all to go pooof so this will have to do for now. All truly brilliant, just have a listen on You Tube or similar :-

Opening track on the above (Saint James Infirmary) is so well recorded it shows Jazz at the Pawnshop how it should be done.

If you like the John Campbell  stuff just buy them both together - big mistake if you dont..

'Down in the Hole' gets played to death at most HiFi shows, but it is so good it's easy to see why, but 'Saddle up my Pony' is such a tour de Force replete with reverb spring humming in the amp that it will have you out of the chair and dancing for certain towards the end.

Be prepared to play 'Get Your Lies Straight' at huge volume many, many times, courtesy of Ry Cooder at his very best.

That'll do for now.

The two Kings BB and the great Albert.... Albert King sadly no longer with us but watching BB at Glastonbury on the tv as I write this. 85 years old and still (sedately) rockin'!

Great thread.

Try Paul Butterfield "Better Days".

Taj Mahal "The Real Thing"  with the banjo and the Tuba band.

Buddy Guy and Junior Wells "Hoodoo Man Blues"

Roy Gaines "I Got the TBone Walker Blues"

Muddy Waters w/ Johnny Winter "Hard Again"

I also like the Peter Green "Robert Johnson: recommended above.

While you are looking, pick up anything by Delbert McClinton, James Hunter or James Harman.  Not exactly guitar, but really great stuff.

You are due for a trip to the US.  While these guys are old and rarely tour, you can hear this kind of music most weekends in places like Charleston, Greenboro, Charlotte, Athens, Jackson, Little Rock. I hear Tinsley Ellis outside Little Rock just last year.
