The Penguin Guide to Classical Music...

Posted by: Steve2 on 16 June 2011

Some time ago (May 7th) I ordered both of these from a well known online store.  I have just received an email today to say that they do not have a copy of the Classical Music book and are waiting for advice from their supplier.  I have been offered the chance to cancel my order.  Is it worth waiting for or is an updated version just around the corner or would I be better off purchasing a more informative book?

1     "The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings: Ninth Edition"
Brian Morton; Paperback; £22.59

1     "The Penguin Guide to Classical Music: The Must Have CDs and DVDs: The Key Classical Recordings on CD, DVD and SACD (Penguin Guide to Recorded Classical Music)"
Ivan March; Paperback; £23.79

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Cheers, SteveT

Steve - I would not recommend the 9th edition of the Jazz PG; since co-author Richard Cook died it has become less informative and more mainstream.

Problem solved!  Amazon have just informed me that the book is no longer available which is a bit of a drag.  Cheers Chief Chirpa for your nod to an earlier post.

Thanks for your advice on the Jazz Guide Graham but as luck would have it, they had already dispatched that when they notified me of the other...........oh yes.

I think I shall have trawl a few second hand book shops for a copy.

The AMG All Music Guide is a good reference source online.  Informative, and easy to navigate.

I would look into Gramophone lists of bests from years past. Penguin seems to me a committee project.
