unitiqute speakers definition in manual

This is really confusingly worded. I have had speakers set to OFF because I was using the UQ in my main system as a line level device. Now I am setting it up in the lab, driving a pair of Kans. So I need to switch from Off to either Large or Small: And I made the terrible mistake of reading the manual.

"The speaker type options specify high-pass filtering settings.

Select the Large option when the UnitiQute preamplifier output is connected to an external power amplifier or to a subwoofer used to augment the low frequency performance of large (full bandwidth) speakers."

Nope, that doesnt apply. I am not using an external power amp. Nor a subwoofer.

"Select Small only when the UnitiQute preamplifier output is connected to a subwoofer used to provide the low frequency component of a speaker system incorporating small (restricted bandwidth) satellite speakers."

Nope, that doesnt apply. No subwoofer in play here.

"Select None when no speakers are connected directly to the UnitiQute"

Nope, that doesnt apply. I have speakers connected

There is a hint of the solution from this line:

"When Small is specified, a 100Hz high-pass filter is applied to the UnitiQute speaker output signal."

What the manual *should* say is:

"Speakers has three possible settings: Off, Large and Small. In Off mode, the power amps are disabled and you cannot connect speakers to the speaker terminals. This setting is used when you are using the UQ as a line level device within an existing hifi system. Disabling the unused power amps allows all of the power supply to be used by the other circuitry, optimising sound quality in this mode.

In Large or Small mode, the power amplifiers are engaged and you should connect speakers to the speaker terminals.

If you just using one pair of normal speakers, choose Large mode and ignore Small mode.,

If you are wanting to use speakers connected to the UQ, and use an external subwoofer too connected to the UQ preamp output, you have a choice:

Small mode is for smaller speakers which you use in conjunction with a powered subwoofer. In Small mode, the low bass is filtered at 100Hz to allow the external sub to better take over the bass role. In Large mode, you can use an external sub, but there is no bass filtering on the main pair of speakers. If you use a sub, choose between large and small mode as appropriate to the size and capabilities of your main speakers and the tuning of the sub.

If you use a subwoofer which connects inline with the speaker cables that go from UQ to the main speakers, then choose the Large setting.

If in any doubt, consult your dealer."

Or something like that?

And I'm not sure if your interpretation of "Small" mode is correct - as far as I can remember there was another note in the manual stating that this mode could be used for listening at low volumes, such as listening at night so I think that the 100Hz filter actually "cuts" the lower freqs...

I thought the small setting should be used in conjunction with sub woofers. If you don't use subwoofers then just set to large.

I am glad to see that your native British people has had difficulties with that part of the manual as a Dane I was very confused when I read it and was actually thinking of contacting my English teacher to get my school payment back.

Strange Naim hasn’t change that part of the manual, I have just bought my UQ November 2012.

Just let your ears be the judge and choose the option that sounds best! I agree that the manual sounds quite confusing and can give rise to varying interpretations. I have satellite speakers + Sub but found the 'Large' setting was best for my room acoustics etc.
