unit 3.0 and gapeless
Posted by: balma01 on 20 June 2011
Hi,
I've Just received back my Uniti after the 3.0 upgrade.
The main reason to upgrade was the gapless playback but after the upgrade I still have gapes between tracks. My upnp server is asset UPNP installed on a win7 PC.
Does anybody can help me to solve this problem?
Thanks in advance and regards

I had my Uniti upgraded last year and have a similar issue with gapless playback. If I select an album from the remote control / front panel then gapless works fine. However, if I select the same album via Asset on my desktop, it's not gapless. I don't know whether it's an issue with Asset or the Uniti.
As a workround, if I want to play a gapless recording, I choose it from the remote.
Note: my music is stored on a NAS drive, not on the pc.
Thanks Redmires for the answer.
I'm doing some tests and I note that what are you saying is true but I have some albums that reports gaps even if I play them from the uniti display.
Probably the gap is 'inside' the ripped files so I'm looking for something to remove the gaps inside the files.
About asset control, I've noted that If I play a track using asset control, in the PLAYING window I can see the details about the track.
But If I play a track using the controlpoint installed directly on the uniti (a little green display), when I check the PLAYING window in asset control I see that the track is UNKNOWN and the artist is UNKNOWN.
did you note the same?

Normally when ripping you want to 'recreate' the structure of the CD. When ripping you would choose the option to "Add gaps to the previous track" when gaps are actually present on the CD.
Certain kinds of music like opera's, oratoria etc. do have multiple tracks but on the CD there are no gaps between the tracks and they play continuously. So ripping these CDs with the option "Add gaps to the previous track" will still not give gaps because they aren't there in the first place.
However some players (and esp UPnP streamers are prone to this) cannot play tracks gapless even though the tracks don't have gaps. They have to do some extra 'things' like preloading in order to be able to do so.
So depending on wether your original CD has gaps or not and wether you wish your rips to keep the gaps or not, you choose different options when ripping:
- "Add gaps to the previous track" if you want to keep the gaps as they were on the CD;
- "Remove gaps" if you want to remove gaps that were present on the CD but you don't want to keep.
If you have ripped your CD with the wrong option, you can use something like dBPoweramp Music Converter to trim silence from tracks that have the added gaps.

All my tracks show as Unknown as I ripped them as WAV files and I believe they don't handle tags.
Too be honest, I gave up with it all. I found I was spending far too much time faffing around with Asset, Foobar, Kinsky etc and not enough time actually playing music. Now I just select the album on the remote and press "play". It works, and that's good enough for me.
I work in IT and am network certified so god help the man in the street. Or perhaps I'm just getting old and grumpy
Redmires,
When the upgrade was released, Naim representatives explained on this forum that gapless is only supported when controlling the Uniti from the unit itself, from the remote or from the N-Stream application.
Regards,
Redmires,
I agree with you, sometimes I spend too much time around with tag, cover arts etc. and I do not make attention to music.
Anyway the gaps are fastidious, I will look for something to trim silence from tracks.
If somebody knows a good and easy way...suggestions are welcome.
Thanks

I already gave you the information on how to do that
The problem the Asset Contol point or the structure of the whole protocol. I have seen the same issue on my NDX when using Asset before buying an Ipad.
In Asset you can setup a whole playlist, but it will not be completely transferred to the Uniti, but track by track. The Uniti will be told to play a certain track and when that is done it will be told which track is next. When using n-stream, the App is just like a remote, that's why setting up a playlist is a problem.
Linn DS do avoid this issue with their structure and App by giving the whole actual playlist to the DS so it can get the following track in advance, because it knows what will be next.

Clearly your UPNP server doesn't handle gapless playback. If it does then it doesn't relate well with the renderer. Meaning, they dont use the same style of playlist.
It is the same everywhere you go and a MAJOR justification for using a Naim Server if possible. If I select music in my server, playback is gapless. If I select within PlugPlayer on iOS, it is not.
PlugPlayer has NO CLUE about the playlist on the server. It only knows the current track. If it is not given the playlist by the server, how could it possibly play gaplessly??? The same goes vice-versa.
FYI, J River is implementing "Linn specific extensions", which apparently will allow PP and eLyric to send and receive playlists to each other.
I would look into using a real UPNP server. One known to work without these issues (sorry if you are on a Mac).
