WD Nas and new Unitiserve SSD frustration.
Posted by: hannoy63 on 20 June 2011
Hi all, I have just recently installed a new unitiserve, wired to the network along side a Western Digital MyBookWorld Nas. The Uniti can see the nas and the shares and they are enabled but the status is offline. The nas has a static IP, Twonky has been disabled and the shares have CIFS protocol but each time the Uniti rescans I just get red light, I've even tried putting the nas and Uniti on a separate network using a 10/100 switch. Does anyone have anymore ideas or will be a new NAS?
I would look at sharing/security settings of the WD. The Serve can see it but does not have access to R/W.
PS. This type of thing is the reason I purchased the 1TB Serve. No extra hassle, it's all self contained.
Which router are you using?
Have you contacted your retailer?
Using a Billion router, the retailer suggested the switching hub and nothing else, I think the problem might be beyond them. I went for the SSD as I will need over a 1TB for the ripped wav files alone.

+1 if already elevated to a music store - the server needs to be able to create three folders within the root of the sharepoint, as well as a control.ini text file with the NetBIOS name of the server (to establish ad hoc ownership).
As the UnitiServe is seeing the NAS but isn't able to access the shares then I suspect that the shares you have dcreated for the UnitiServe to use do not have full guest read write access.
(You have created separate shares for the UnitiServe in addition to the default shares haven't you? If not then it could be that if the WD NAS has a built in UPnP server that it could be grabbing the folder itself and preventing the UnitiServe accessing files in there.)
If you have passwords and usernames set up on the shares then have they been entered into the UnitiServe?

Hi Phil, thanks for your reply, the good news is I've succeeded in creating a store and share. Copied over a large number of Wav files and began playing them. The bad news is all albums disappeared late last night shortly after copying over a HDtracks flac album, I'm sure that was just coincidental. The Nas is permanently online and available on the network, to me this would suggest it's not the router, tried a refresh this morning but still nothing. At least I've still got the mac book pro and Channel D to fall back on.
Peter.
Hi Peter,
Can I ask exactly where you copied the HDTracks FLAC album to?
If you have a folder on your NAS which has been promoted to be a *STORE* for the UnitiServe then (as per the UnitiServe manual) that folder should not be accessed by anything other than the UnitiServe and its contents should not be added to, ammended or in any other way modified by any other person or process than the UnitiServe itself.
If you have manually added tracks to a folder which is being used as a store on a UnitiServe or HDX then it is possible that you have rendered teh folder structure out of synce with the databases that it keeps and so it is unable to access that folder structure (as it no longer aligns with the UnitiServe's databases).
Downloaded or ripped-from-other-devices-or-applications music *MUST* be put into a separate shared folder on the NAS and that folder be set up as a share on the Unitiserve (which is - as far as the UnitiServe is concerned - a read only pool of music that the UnitiServe does not administer itself).
Phil
Phil, the files are on a separate public share that had already been setup as a default from the manufacturers, the sub-folder is called 'music' as is the store for the CD rips.
Peter.
I'm afraid I cannot visualise the structures you have set up on your NAS however I suspect that the solution will be reasonably simple and just a matter of setting the structures up correctly - if you would email me directly on phil.harris@naimnet.com (or via the email addresses provided for support in the sticky at the top of the forum) then we can arrange for me to log in remotely to your network and take a look?
Thanks
Phil
