Usb into router.

Hi guys,

Pretty basic question for some of you but unsure of the best method to employ. I have a UQ2, Muso and a QB. Is it possible to plug a USB stick into my router and get whichever device I am using at the time to play the music stored on it. I use mainly Tidal but on occasion use a USB to play files that I have had to download due to them not being available.

Is this is possible how would I go about it? I use an iPad and HTC One M8 typically to access the Naim app.

Thanks

Sam

I don't think you could do this, but if you put the USB stick into your UQ you should be able to play it to all your devices using multiroom.

Many routers have in-built UPnP capabilities, and can be used as streaming servers to do exactly what you suggest. The music stored on the USB stick inserted into the router would appear via the router's music serving application in the same way as, for example, your NAS music library appears via the music server running there. I don't do this routinely, but can confirm that it works the way you want with an Asus RT-N66U as well as with the router (a Sagemcom) supplied by my ISP. Give it a whirl, first ensuring you have enabled UPnP on your router (and DLNA if that is there as a separate option: this is the home network digital media protocol which is a subset / works with UPnP).

Remember most routers refer to UPnP for port control and nothing to do with media streaming - although as mentioned some also now  support DLNA/UPnP media streaming capability as well

OK thanks guys. I have just read that the Netgear Nighthawk I have has a media server option so will see if it works.

Worked really well. Plugged a USB in went to UPNP on Naim app and I could see the routers software which let me access stored music. As a bonus bubble upnp was also showing enabling access to google music.
