The Night Manager

I find very little on TV to enjoy but am really enjoying this absolute masterpiece.
Wow has this thread meandered here and there since I last visited. While I can take Georges comment on the movies/videos of Le Carre never coming close to the nuance and complexity of his books, I nevertheless have found them excellent almost without exception. The Night Manager received a great review in yesterday's Wall Street Journal. It is broadcast on our side of the pond on the 19th. You probably already know this but I was interested to read that Le Carre's sons are behind this production and Le Carre himself approved the changes from the original book. There may even be a Night Manager 2.
High marks over here for Tom Hiddleston ,who is being touted as a possible next James Bond, and for Hugh Laurie.
Can't wait.
It'll be interesting to see how US viewers react to Hugh Laurie, as they see him basically as House and nothing else. I thought he was fantastic as House, and always found it frustrating when other UK people refused to see Laurie as anything other than a funny idiot. Yes, he was superb as George, and I loved him in that role, but he was at times staggeringly good as House. It was a real shame he never got the Grammy he deserved, especially for the mental hospital double episode.
Thought Olivia Colman was excellent too. Being an odd choice for the part gave her the opportunity to bring something unexpectedly human to proceedings. Was fun to read that Twitter erupted with calls not for Hiddleston but for her to be the next Bond.
It may not have been faultless, but a really good series.
I watched the last three parts again yesterday on BBC catch-up. It bears multiple viewings, which is not something I can say about much contemporary cinematic films, for example.
I shall get the DVDs when they come out, to sit next to Tinker Taylor, Smiley’s People, and The Perfect Spy.
And get a copy of the book also. I was offered the one I read last Autumn, and I now wish I had not looked the gift horse in the mouth.
ATB from George

Trying 'Marcella' just now.

Graeme - I have got Marcella and Follow The Money backed up, ready to view.
One of the things I really loved about Trappewd was its spare, atmospheric score. One of the best TV scores I have ever heard. What did you think of the music?
Superb - enhancing yet unobtrusive.
We are now totally absorbed in 'Follow the Money'...Episode 7&8 tomorrow night.
