Power Consumption

Posted by: David O'Higgins on 14 March 2016

I bought a power meter from Amazon and plugged my gear into it (via wireworld matrix). Power consumers are 2*555DR, 552DR, 500ps, Nat01ps, Unitiserve and V1Dac. At idle, these are consuming 122w, going up to 150w at my normal listening level.

If my maths are right, this means that leaving it switched on all the time is costing me about €12 per month. Anyone else tried this?

Just to balance this up for the non-UK readers & to give the brits something to moan about   -   sorry David O'Higgins,  nothing is listed for Ireland.    This table is data from Energy Market Survey by NUS Consulting for electricity prices in USD per kWh for 2015

1 Italy              0.157
2 Germany     0.1522
3 UK                0.1416
4 Belgium       0.1117
5 Portugal      0.1105
6 Spain           0.1104
7 Slovakia      0.099
8 USA             0.0943
9 France        0.0897

17 Finland    0.0642
18 Sweden   0.0534

Nearly all the power used by audio gear, and many other appliances, ends up as heat, so I don't regard it as wasted. It makes my house slightly warmer, and reduces the heating bill a little. Of course, that doesn't always work for anyone whose house gets hot in summer, (especially if you use aircon) but where we live, that never happens.

Mike,

In Ireland, I am paying about  $0.148 per unit. My electricity supply meter is single rate.  But I am not sure whether your table includes standing charges, or not. For the purpose of our discussion here, standing charges should be disregarded.

And I agree with Zen on the principle, but I would not power down because of a monetary calculation.

The meter which I bought from Amazon also purports to calculate a CO2 emissions figure from the data. It will be interesting to compare this to emissions from a car - how many kms = an hour of music? Or is this taking utility too far???

Michael, assuming your meter is correctly measuring the 315w used per hour then your stand by bill is just over £25 per month not inc standing charge.

Agreed (and that is assuming the cost is 10.94p per unit (kwh), not £10.94 as stated!)

Whoooppppsss... yes sorry 10.94p per unit !!! Blimey thank goodness it isn't £10.94!!!

It will go up to £10.94 per unit to pay for Hinkley C and Sizewell C.

Our oven costs a fortune to run. I tried to convince the wife that we could eat all our meals cold but she said something about life being there to enjoy. I agreed and hence the Naim kit remains powered up...

The oil fired Aga is now a bargain, with heating oil at 25p a litre, more than offsets the Naim running costs, and we can now warm our food in the oven rather than on the UServe...

Have a good Tuesday
