SN2 "hdd" select button not lightning

Posted by: Arnaud on 19 March 2016

I've just installed my brand new Supernait 2: everything seems to be working except that the hdd selector on the front panel (which I press to listen to my NDX) won't light itself when I press it. It plays music correctly though.

Did this allready happen to someone else?

Is there a way I can fix this by myself or should I send my SN back to Naim?

Regards,

Arnaud

I'd take it back to the dealer and request a replacement.

Complications can be expected once the French get involved

But seriously, you may be noticing more complaints posted on the forum. These may or may not be meaningful in the grand scheme. The bigger question would be whether Naim is actually experiencing an increase in production quality issues and I doubt we'll find an answer to that here.

Well the French has never been famous for the reliabitlity. From cars to vacuum cleaners. I avoid their cars like plague ...

Never had one, but I've heard their vacuums really suck.

I'll let myself out ....

Hmm not sure .. Much of the world currently relies on French (and Russian) rocket launchers to deliver orbiting  payloads currently..and of course the first large scale particle accelerator was built by the French and Swiss and  no issues with reliability there.. I think France, not unlike many countries, have suffered quality assurance issues at certain times with certain industries especially when costs are being driven down.. but I am not sure it's endemically French..and French engineering in many circles is highly regarded and reliable..

Having said I have yet to hear a Focal speaker I particularly enjoy... and yes I find many French visual designs quirky... but perhaps that is the Anglosaxon in me..

PS I think Naim's production QA processes are down to them.. and I'd be suprised if there is much if any  direction/involvement from Focal...

I've had a number of French cars in the past, and never once did any of them let me down. British car brands, on the other hand, nearly  all went bust decades ago, and it wasn't hard to see why.

I agree. Ask for a new one to be delivered. You don't need to send it back and then wait for it to be mended.

I once had a Peugeot 206 diesel, When I finally gave it to my brother, who ran it for a further three years, it had completed over 160,000 miles so I am not too sure that I agree

Given that Arnaud lives in Paris, and presumably is French, I'm not sure having a dig at French products is entirely appropriate. We have had three French cars: a Renault 19, a Peugeot 106 and a Citroen Xantia, and all were totally reliable.

In this case, it is the quality control of a British company, assembling products in Britain, that is questionable.

it is a matter of concern to have this kind of problem on a GBP 3000 amplifier.

Weather its French or Brit make is immaterial.

Its particularly distressing if one is planning to get an SN2 and then one wonders if its worth it all..after reading these.

Living in a country with no known Naim aftersales is where i am coming from.

Atleast Arnaud can send it across the channel or Naim can help him out but for customers far away ..... it raises questions weather Naim is the way to go forward or stick to something which is locally available and try to like what you get.

For most people ( certainly for me ) GBP 3000 is a lot of money.

Twice my CD5XS has been to Dubai to get a lens fixed ( Naim were gracious to offer free replacement ) but the logistics of good movement from my country to another for service can be very daunting.

If a malfunction happens again on my CD5XS... i would be devastated..

Joerand - i agree with you. We may never find out but Naim must be very wary and pull up their socks ( I am sure they are noticing this thread ).

On reputation lies a customers trust and social media can cut it into tatters pretty quickly.

OTOH - if the customer has made a mistake in operations - then Naim must be quick to reply and set right the matters on the Naim forum.

Thank you for your help. I'm a Naim loyal customers and, for this reason, I'm pretty astonished these kind of things can happen. I'll liaise with Naim through my dealer to sort this matter.

Arnaud

I don't think the HDD input is designed to receive a line input. Just plug the NDX into another input, CD for example, and all should be fine.

Touch wood. My SN2 has been working fine since 2013.

The NDX, however have had its display changed due to dimming pixels.

That being said, apart from remote controls which is important, I wish amplifiers can be made simplier (less "intelligence" for lack of a better word) and hence less prone to fail.

Said from the perspective that Naim and Focal yet operate as two separate entities? Or with some wishful thinking that Naim's purse strings are not tied to the mothership? Mission one of a corporate take over is to streamline costs. I'm not suggesting reduced QA is a part of this mission, but I'd be surprised if a few folks at Naim haven't been sweating their jobs since the merger. I could be way off base, but equally speculative.

Hi Joerand said from a perspective of the former, Ie they operate as two seperate entities.. Having been involved with mergers before similar operational seperation has occurred.. But clearly only Naim know for sure..I have no inside knowledge on this..
