Boomerang Vinyl

i have a few lp12's that are warped to Buggery, and while I'm unsure how this phenomenon has occurred, it's most annoying as it causes the stylus to skip on my lp12. I've done some research and aware you can use the glass and oven method but this seems a bit precarious to me. Is there an official device you can buy to sort the damaged records? Annoyingly it's some of my favourite ones that are affected too.

Thanks gents.

There are machines available but they are very expensive.

Two pieces of glass in the oven (with very gentle heat) is the only practical solution available to most of us. Plenty of pertinent info is available on the internet of course.

Good luck.

It's notable that there are two types of warps. Larger warps from long-term storage may be fixable by the numerous methods discussed throughout the web. Those from the manufacturing process are not fixable. Some albums from the 60's and early 70's required the record to be manually released from the press by the index finger of the operator. This could sometimes result in a small dish at the outer edge. The record then fully cooled with the warp "set in the vinyl memory" and can't be undone. Modern, mass production presses automated the release process and supposedly eliminated these warps.

Furutech make a lovely thing for flattening warped LPs - rather like a small square Corby trouser press. It's not cheap though.  The cheap and dirty method is to use two plates of glass placed in a hot (but cooling) oven.  It's super-risky and, unless the glass is spotlessly clean, risks getting dirt melted into the vinyl - not a good thing.  You need to experiment a bit with a stack of LPs that you are willing to lose before you perfect it.

Have used a Vinyl Flat (link easily googled) for several years with very good results.  It is not expensive, and there is a warming pouch that can be purchased at an additional cost for those who prefer not to use an oven. It comes with very clear instructions for temp and time based on record type and thickness.

As the temp needs to be accurate for best results, a reliable oven thermometer is highly recommended. Also, as Joerand mentions above, nothing can help a "dished" record.

"nothing can help a "dished" record"

that's what a record clamp is for, they can also help with a warp but not on a Linn, or a WT.

A sad end for such fine turntables.

Yes I did read on. Don't think I will ever stick my LP12 in an oven though
