NAC A5 or SL cable

Posted by: overprint on 23 March 2016

A recent house move has meant my x2  8 metre Nac A5 speakers leads are way too long and SWMBO is moaning they make the lounge look like a hi-fi demo room. My original plan was to halve them and sell on x2 4m leads however here's a thought, would it be worth making the jump up to the SL cable considering the rest of the system?

My system has never sounded better since the house move so this would be icing on the cake so to speak. Any thoughts anyone?

(System = LP12, NDX, Nac 52 and Nap 135s into SL2s).

I think your system is plenty good enough to benefit from SL cables. Of course there are many other ways you could spend the cash on upgrades, such as PSUs, but if you can get a home dem of the SL speaker cables, I suspect you'll be reluctant to give them back.

I think it's a wonderful gesture to keep SWMBO happy and content .. go for it.

As ever - an audition is necessary. SL cabling was developed on, and is thus optimised for 'new Naim' amplification, so you just gotta suck it and see.

At least it's 'upgrade safe' (assuming one does not stray from the true path), and looks prettier and more discreet than A5 for sure.

SL cables work wonderfully well between my 250DR and SL2s, though as John says it was developed with the new style amps. You really need to try them - and a run in pair at that.

Just cut the NACA5 in half and treat the wife to a very nice holiday

I use both NACA5 and SL - there is of course some improvement with the SL.
But it's not massive - the law of diminishing returns is clearly demonstrated here.

Having said that... SL has some advantages:

It does bend
Colour - well... khaki / mustard / brownish (not sure if this is an advantage)
It does sound better, more open and neutral than NACA5.
Primary connection at the amp end is via banana-style plugs, so it's easier to wire the amp on a rack.

I'm shocked Adam, I though SL was the cure for all ills and the only cable to be had with Naim amps, a bit like naca5 was before Naim brought out SL.  There was a time when you risked excommunication using anything but naca

Yeap... Not all is gold that shines...

Of course my music room system sounded nicer with SL when I tried it. But NACA5 is more than capable. It's actually better with an all Naim setup.

But at the end of the day the other room got the SL's - in preparation for some tests of new speakers. See my post here:

That's a big outlay against your existing system although they are outstanding cables but they will give the best sq boost in a higher end system. An alternative might be TG black speaker cables and an active four pack of  135 s if you can locate another pair.

Apologies. I meant TQ cables.

Apparently I was the first one to get SLs in Poland they work rather well with my 282/250. Should be fun testing new speakers now.

Thanks everyone so far. Mixed thoughts apart from "try before you buy" (as always). I'm not looking for a seismic change to my system so active is out (too many boxes) and the 500 series is out of budget. Plus I listen to a lot of music that isn't shall we say, recorded with huge budgets. So I'm only looking for final tweaks to my current system really and thought SL might be that.

I could look towards Fraims (Fraimlites) or Powerlines ( I have a HiLine already) and then call it a day and just buy tons more music.

Make your wife happy by buying super expensive speaker wire?....  Brilliant!  I think I am going to give this a try.

I have at long last heard the Super Lumina speaker cable and I really like it so far. Will need a longer term trial at home before ready to commit though.
