How to Prevent Asset UPnP seeing Old iTunes Library

Posted by: NewNaim16 on 24 March 2016

Here's a little issue I'd appreciate some guidance on please. I'm using Asset UPnP server, dBpoweramp CD Ripper, Mac Mini and a Naim 272. My original CD ripping predates this setup and was done using iTunes. In order to regain album artwork views I've decided to rip all my CDs again using dBpoweramp CD Ripper (in FLAC format).  Everything works fine except that the Naim app in the iPad sees both the original iTunes ripped files and the new FLAC files ripped with dBpoweramp CD Ripper. Since these are both in the Mac Mini Music folder that makes sense but seeing everything twice is not ideal. Rather than delete iTunes ripped files, I'd prefer to hide them just in case I might ever need them in the future.

How can I prevent seeing both the sets of ripped files? If I move the iTunes folder to another location that would at least temporarily break iTunes and secondly where is the metadata from dBpoweramp CD Ripper stored?

I searched this and the dBpoweramp forums and couldn't find a match but thought I'd ask here first.

Thanks

Thinking about this more I took the pragmatic approach of simply moving my iTunes library. Maybe that's not the most elegant solution but it works. I see that the metadata is embedded in the audio files.

Sorry for the apparently dumb question. Time to get beck to more ripping ...

I don't see the point of keeping two libraries of the same music. Once you're happy with each new rip, and have it backed up on a separate device, I'd delete the old one.

Unless you're keeping the one set of rips in a compressed format for use on portable device(s)?  Perhaps that's  Newnaim16's reason?

Even so, I think I'd keep one library and hold a copy of it in the other format required, to ensure consistency of metadata etc. In fact, that is what I do, although oddly enough, I use compressed (but lossless) FLACs at home and WAVs on the road, as my car won't play FLAC.

Having made the decision to rip everything again with dBpoweramp CD Ripper in FLAC format I wanted to keep the original ALAC files until I was 101% certain that I wouldn't need them again. I'm approaching things super cautiously - call me paranoid if you like ;-)

Initially, I also considered compatibility with mobile devices but dismissed that as the original ALAC files are not mobile device friendly and I don't have much need for portable playback these days anyway.

If you get a Sansa Clip (£35) you can put FLAC files onto it by dragging and dropping. The SQ is superb.

Asset lets you exclude certain file types in the configuration so you could exclude the iTunes specific file types and only allow FLAC/WAV files.

Wow, that's amazingly inexpensive. I feel compelled to get one at that price, just for the odd occasion when it would be handy. Thanks for the heads up.

A very good point indeed Richard. I should have thought of that myself - I must be getting slow - even though I knew that Asset provided that feature I overlooked using it. That's a much more elegant solution than moving the iTune library. Thanks very much for tip.

The supplied ear buds are a bit ropey though - I've just bought some Sennheisers on Amazon (CX300 I think) for £19 and the difference is amazing. When you have these you realise how good the Clip is. It comes with 8gb of memory, and I've added a 32gb card for the princely sum of £8.45. It is basic, but does what you need, and weighs virtually nothing so is perfect for the gym.

Unless you're determined to use the Verify function in dBpoweramp, why are you re-ripping at all?  ALAC is AFAIK lossless.  Why not just use dBpoweramp to convert the ALAC files to FLAC?  You can set dBpoweramp to save the "converted to FLAC" files in a different directory if you still wish to have the ALAC files.  I have approximately 3000 CDs (+4000 LPs) and the thought of having to re-rip the CDs appals me!  Took me more than 2 years to rip the CDs and digitise the LPs (including all the faff of splitting the LP copies into tracks and manually adding metadata) last time.

I think it's nice to have the verify function although not essential. Yes, ALAC is lossless but the reason to rip again is to get the artwork which I definitely do want. I'm not aware that using dBpoweramp to convert the ALAC files to FLAC would reveal the artwork in the FLAC files but please tell me if you know different. One point is that I only have ~ 200 CDs so ripping is nothing like as big a challenging as yours.

Point taken.  However, you can add the artwork to your existing files, and having had to add the artwork manually to my digitised LP files, what I did was to select all the files for one album, right click on them, then if you're using the PC version of dBpoweramp, you will be presented with the option to edit them, including adding/removing album art.  For the Mac version, right click and the edit with dBpoweramp option is in the 'Services' bit at the bottom.  Of course, that way, you don't get the folder.jpg file in the directory.  If you decide you must have that (personally I couldn't be bothered), then just insert a copy of the album artwork into the folder and rename it folder.jpg.

Very true and good input, indeed I could do that. However, given the opportunity to use the verify function and that I've got a manageable quantity of CDs to rip, I think that on balance I'll re-rip. If I had ~ 3000 CDs (+4000 LPs) then I certainly wouldn't contemplate starting again though - that's a huge amount of work!

Yes, and it's something I wouldn't have embarked on if I wasn't retired and hence had the time (when SWMBO wasn't chasing me to so something or I was playing my guitar(s).

Do you have the artwork visible in iTunes itself?

If so then http://dougscripts.com/itunes/...s/ss.php?sp=embedart should embed any downloaded artwork into the files themselves (iTunes stores downloaded artwork separately). Then using http://dougscripts.com/itunes/...?sp=savealbumartjpeg will export artwork to folder.jog if that's required by your UPnP server.

Yes, the artwork is visible in iTunes. Thanks for the links, in fact I'd previously seen them but decided against that approach as on the page of the first URL there's a note (August 2014) about inconsistent results with later versions of iTunes.

Anyway, I'm already about half way through the new rip with the benefit of AccurateRip verifying the results. AccurateRip has identified just a few errors, which, with one exception, I've sucessefully addressed with a simple minor clean of the CD.
