Spendor bc3

Posted by: Magnolia on 25 March 2016

I have a Uniti2 and a pair of IBL's with a subwoofer. I have an opportunity to buy a pair of BC3's for about Aus$1500.  Is this a wise move?  Will my amp handle them.

Any help appreciated.

No idea what Au$1500 are in $US/€Eur or £UKP

But if you handle IBL's with a Uniti, the BC3 might be similar or an easier load

Those BC3 could very well be more than 30-35 years old so better check crossover and all units are fully working

Funny these old Spendors do keep a good resale value, good old UK handcraft, the current Spendor range are uninteresting IMO

Magnolia, I think you should really hear a pair first.  The BCIII was a development of the earlier BCI and BCII.  As such performance is definitely BBC monitor in style and presentation - i.e. not the first choice for rock and more upbeat music but rather good spatially, tonally accurate, and great with much classical music.  They're beautifully made, and sure-fire classics, so AU$1500 may well be a good price if the condition warrants it. Check the Celestion HF drivers carefully as they can be a bit fragile after so many years use (and maybe even abuse). Make sure they are on good solid open frame stands, nothing too high and definitely not placed on the floor.  IIRC their impedance is pretty benign at around 8 ohms and despite wearing a 12" driver for the bass they don't go that low either.  The drivers don't like to much power so the Uniti 2 is probably just about right there.  Apart from that, I'd imagine them to be rather different in sound presentation to your IBLs, so some adjustment is doubtless in order.  However, they have to be worth a try and a listen if your musical tastes align with their strengths.

Thanks for the advice. I do need to have a listen but I am tempted. I am into jazz and blues and am not looking for a big base, although I do want some.

The real question should probably have been, what might be a better option under $2,000??

Thanks
