Synology DSM 6 not compatible with Minim Server 0.8.3.1
Posted by: Mike1960 on 28 March 2016
Just a warning that stupidly I had my Synology NAS set up to automatically install the latest version (rather than just important updates). It has upgraded itself to DSM 6.0-7321. Unfortunately this is not compatible with Minim Server 0.8.3.1
Just wanted to get this out there ASAP. You have been warned! I will try and contact Simon Nash to see if he is aware and will post down the track when this has been fixed. Feel very silly as it is the only service I use on this NAS. Meantime it is back to Synology Media Server

Simoncn @ Minimserver ........ a manual update to the latest release .........
MinimServer 0.8.3.4 for Synology. This is a minor update release for MinimServer 0.8.3. It was released on 22nd January 2016. Add x64 version for compatibility with DSM 6.0 beta 2
Mike & Mike,
As a Synology user who has never installed MinimServer (because of the inconvenience of having to install Java) and who finds Synology Media Server to be pretty good, I would be interested in your opinion of the main benefits of switching to MinimServer. Does it simply boil down to the ability to convert FLAC source to WAV real-time, or are there any other major benefits that might convince me to make the effort to switch?
HMack, I've tried Minimserver but much prefer Synology Media Server.
- I like the simplicity of folder view & have no wish to have the faster art that Minim does such a good job with. When I do occasionally browse using the visual reminders of album covers, then Syn's MS does it as well as I need.
- I only use WAV file codec & have no need for the excellent gapless transcoding that Minim does well. Syn DSM-5 does not transcode gapless, although the non-gapless transcoding is perfectly OK. I have not tried DSM-6 in this area as I have no FLAC files, but note they have done something new with transcoding video - will be interesting to hear reports from FLAC users on this.
There are full instructions on the Minimserver website on exactly what you need to do. If you follow them to the letter you'll be up and running with Minim in half an hour. This happened to me earlier in the week. Basically, you uninstall Minim, using to option to keep a copy, upload the new version, making sure you set the trust level to all developers, and that's it. All your customised settings are retained. What threw me was that the status of Minim stuck on 'starting' for so long that I thought it had gone wrong, but it suddenly sprung into life. I updated the Synology to the latest Java at the same time - in fact before I updated Minim.
To me, the intelligent view that you get in Minim is infinitely better than the very inflexible arrangements in Synology. Incidentally, I tried playing FLAC with Synology and compared it with transcoding in Minim and the latter sounds far better: much more warm and natural.
Good news, am now back up and running again. Thanks Mike and Nigel, I had not seen the earlier thread. Nigel was right in his summary.
My lesson learned is not to allow major version releases to happen automatically!
HMACK, there are extensive threads on here on MinimServer, but I find three key features that justify my using it 1) it plays gapless playback eg Dark Side of the Moon (my favourite album), 2) it transcodes FLAC to WAV which I think probably sounds better, 3) it supports classical music tagging. Additionally it is much faster at browsing through cover art.

Here are some advantages discussed:

(You have to read through some offtopic postings though.)
Thanks (both Mikes) for the replies. I may well give MinimServer a try, since slow browsing through cover art is the one flaw I have found with the Synology Media Server. I may well give FLAC to WAV transcoding a try as well.
Thanks.
After updating to new DSM I cannot transcode on thy fly using MinimWatch on MacOsx. There is no field to type flac:wav :-(
Make sure the minimstreamer extension is installed.
Wow, I am so stupid. Thank you. Now it works
You are so stupid!
Well, I had the same problem after reinstalling minimserver on DSM6
So did I. We are all stupid together.
