How to streaming from my Ipad the "analog planet FM broadcast" through my Naim streamer ?

Posted by: BENEDICT on 30 March 2016

Hello,

Until a few weeks ago I could download one AIFF-C  to my NAS and afterwards listen through my ND5XS.

Due to copyright issues it is only permitted to streaming through "sound cloud APP"

I have downloaded to my Ipad  the "sound cloud" APP.

But when connecting the Ipad to the USB/nd5xs and starting the listening, no sound at all

either through IPAD or through NDXS

Is  there anybody out there who could help me ?

Thanks beforehand

Benedict

Do you have the version with Bluetooth (the newer revision of the ND5XS).

If not a couple of options... (1) add a Airport Express and use AirPlay or (2) add a small Bluetooth receiver.

Hi Benedict, Eloise

To add some background to this USB input query. The original ND5XS manual shows

So I am guessing that playing from an app on any iOS device through the USB input is not supported.

I know it works fine with a Naim Mu-so, including with the Soundcloud App which I have tried. I prefer to use this option as it is supported as a Multiroom source. The description in the Mu-so manual is subtly different:

The clue seems to be the phrase "under the local control of the iOS device". I think it is phrased this way as officially Naim seem reluctant to say that playing back from iOS apps is officially supported.

I would also be interested to know if you have the newer revision of the ND5XS (with Bluetooth) Benedict, in case the USB input behaves any differently.

Hoping to find out experimentally before too long if this upgrade to my original Naim Uniti does the "trick" https://www.naimaudio.com/news...ne-control-naimuniti

Just to say that I believe "this upgrade" which is a firmware update or updates to the Uniti makes the handling of the USB socket to be the same across the range of Uniti and N streamers. I don't believe it matters whether the unit is Bluetooth enabled or not to the way the USB socket behaves. You can certainly connect an iPhone or iPad to the USB socket on a streamer and control the playing of music stored on it to a streamer controlled by the Naim IOS app, but I can't comment on whether you can do the same with music being currently streamed into the device and output it as a digital stream.  You could output it as an analogue signal of course and it is also possible to take a feed from the idevice lightening or equivalent socket which is pre-DAC, so you could connect that to a digital input on a Naim device, but not perhaps through the USB on the front panel.

Hi David

Yes, I did not mean to suggest that it had anything directly to do with Bluetooth, only that the USB functionality might also have changed on the later model.

What was simply a firmware upgrade on later models I am pretty sure needed a hardware upgrade on the original Uniti.

Interesting though that it seems the Mu-so does allow direct playing from iOS apps, including BBC iPlayer as well as Soundcloud, if the Uniti and N series do not. The advantage over analogue or digital input on the Mu-so is that USB can be used as a source for Multiroom.

Thanks

Hi Roger

I remember Phil Harris clarifying that the original Uniti was the only device that may have a firmware version earlier than 3.0 and the firmware upgrade info says to talk to Naim if your firmware is below 3.0, so that might well be that a hardware upgrade is needed too. If you have 3.0, then you can put the latest firmware on if you want to.

But I just tried playing BBC iplayer on my iPad Air plugged into the USB socket on my SuperUniti and there was no way of telling, that I could find, the SuperUniti to listen to iplayer. I was just offered the same selection of things, both on the front panel and via the IOS app as when you plug in any USB drive.

Maybe some others can add relevant experience which throws done light on the question and indeed the OP's question which I can't help with at all.

Good evening Eloise

My Nd5 was bought in June 2012

Therefore, not with BT

Besides, my router is airport extreme not express

Therefore not with airplay

Thank you for replying

Hi Benedict

Here is (part of) my setup. I use the older Airport Express that plugs directly into a power socket. These are still available through Amazon and eBay, for example http://www.amazon.co.uk/AirPor...port+express+802.11n although this has a UK power adapter. It is the A1264 model that I use.

For Airplay to the Uniti I have turned off the Wireless network on the Express, as it is directly connected by Ethernet to the Extreme, and enabled Airplay. Then I take the digital output through an adapter into a spare digital input on the Uniti.

One other alternative might have been to use Google Chromecast Audio but it looks as though the SoundCloud app does not support this under iOS.

One way or another I hope you are soon able to listen to AnalogPlanet through your Naim system.
