British Steel……………

British Steel……………

I can’t quite recall how quickly (or slowly) the Government was to step in and support British Bankers a few years back – and yes, I am aware it was a different Government that did this.  But I don’t see much enthusiasm in the current Government to step in and support British Steelworkers and more importantly, the British steel industry.

Is banking that much more important to the overall British economy than steel making, or is it that more bankers went to Harrow, Eton and Oxford ?

Perhaps I should have posted this in the “Brain Teaser” thread

It does seem rather perverse that certainly the London construction sector is booming right now, requiring many tonnes of steel for frames, floor slabs, etc.  At the same time we're talking about closing our steel manufacturing capacity down completely.  For an island nation, that simply cannot be a sensible strategic step.  The government must surely realise it's importance, not just for construction, but for the nation's defense capability to build battleships, armoured vehicles and fighting planes.  Or will we just buy them all from USA and hope we stay friends forever....

China slaps punitive tariffs on HQ steel imports, wonder if they'll continue to flog us illegally subsidised steel at a low price once alternative sources dry up.

Of course they will ! Cameron likes them...........................................

Maybe I'm misreading ... But I think SAT's suggestion was that once Port Talbot closes, there will be less alternatives to Chinese steel so Chinese prices will go up...

Cameron and Osborne are in love with the Chinese, but the Chinese treat them and Britain with contempt...

Maybe it's all that opium that we forced on them.

I think, Eloise, that you are getting my message   Once Port Talbot closes, that is the end of basic British steel making - finito ! Once the basic furnaces are allowed to cool and distort, that's it !!!!

Sure, we will be able to import some form of basic steel and turn that into high quality specialised steel. But we will be at mercy of other producers of basic steel, be that Europe, USA, China, India......

Even "friends" charge over-the-odds when it suits them. (and just watch the Eurovision Song Contest to see who our "friends" are in Europe................)

And we are talking about "forever" !

Management By-out of Port Talbot with Government support.

What does this translate into ?

It translates into exactly whatever they want it to mean (but which they probably haven't worked out yet).  Still, it's better than a Dante style approach to the situation, even if it doesn't work out.

The UK government have clearly done some figures behind the scenes because they blocked the EU Chinese steel tariff proposals.  It would seem it was politically expedient to allow British steel jobs to go in return for what, we don't know.  What is for sure, China would have exerted pressure on all the EU nations at an individual level and only the UK government bent over and took one.  Well, they lined the steel workers up to take one.

It's likely that the financial sector was the bargaining chip for the Chinese.

Is that the finance sector that's about to merge with Deutsche Bourse?
