Powering down system

Posted by: Got Hi-Fi? on 31 March 2016

Do you power down your power amp when not using it? or do you leave it on all the time as well as your pre? I am not really talking about for long periods, but say, during the days when you are at work, if you listen during the evenings.

I don't, most don't, some do.

Lots of threads about this. In my opinion leave powered up - sounds better and less chance of fuses going pop when powering up and down. I also believe (from previous experience) that power supplies have longer lives when not turned on and off on a daily basis.

There is a search icon in the black menu bar on the top of this page. It looks something like a hybrid of a magnifying glass and the letter Q

Open that window and click on "Advanced Search". Your query is one of the most frequently asked questions here so you should find lots and lots of results.

I always leave everything on, unless when I go away on a long trip or during some bad, stormy days.

Good choice !

Expensive choice, but then what else would you be spending your hard-earned on if not powering your audio equipment ?   Powering your yaght?  Powering your light aircraft ?   Financing an expensive set of wheels ?  ...no, for me I've given up the yaght, sacked the crew, sold the wings, scrapped the wheels and now sit in comfort and bliss in front of my always-on Naim components.   Does my green conscience bother me ?   ..of course, but this one of life's struggles we have to endure in pursuit of audio nirvana

I've managed to keep my yacht, fired the chef, and am now relegated to do my own cooking. Financial hardships arise, but at least I can afford to keep my gear fired up most all the time.

Another question I'm a bit embarrassed to ask!.........but should I switch my 272 off at the back of the unit when I've finished listening or is there a way to simply put it into standby? I couldn't find anything in the manual. Thank you.

I don't own a 272,but traditionally (and that is why so many have asked) naim "prefers" if you leave your equipment powered up at all times - that is why the only power switch is not readily accessible, but at the rear. I assume the 272 is a naim and not some other company

thank you.

Yes it is a Naim - Nac-n 272 - but the reason for asking is that I can't see anyway to even put it into standby, so to close down I radio or Tidal, the only way I can see is to turn it off at the rear? But I must be missing something?!

Well, I don't own one, but I've just looked at the manual online.  Pressing STOP on the N272 stops playback (including radio), so I assume stop on the remote would do the same thing.  If that doesn't work, I suggest MUTE.  Power consumption of the unit is low.  Just leave it switched on.  Hopefully someone who actually owns one with give a better answer.

I have a 272 and as Dungassin says above, pressing STOP seems to do just that.

Handy little button really
