Moving from US to UK

I am hoping to move from the US to the UK and have a couple of Naim pieces (172XS / 200) and wondering about the power supply. Can I just take them in to a Naim dealer to have the power supplies updated?
I would talk to Naim support directly instead here.
By the way, when I moved from London to the San Francisco Bay Area many moons ago, I had a real bad experience with my Naim dealer (no name name here), I bought a NAC 52 and 4 NAP 135 from them before I moved. However, they shipped to my home with the 230V version despite that fact that I made very clear to them that they were for 110V US home, can you imagine that? And more, I was charged VAT (something around 18% of the purchased price) for items exported to the US !!! ![]()
It is certainly within Naim's capability to swap the power supplies, indeed I have owned a box that was once a 120v version and now a 240v convert. However, what the price would be would need to be established directly with the guys and girls in head office I would think. At the very least, talk with a UK dealer, and one in your destination area who is likely get your future business.
A simpler solution may well be to sell your US items in the US and buy UK ones when you arrive over here.
By the way, you own a decent rain coat and umbrella, don't you? ![]()
Given the wider availability of Naim in the UK, I'd consider selling up and starting again. That saves the cost of conversion to 240 v, and the cost and risk of shipping is eliminated.
I'm with Chris here - probably better selling and re-buying in the UK. However, if you don't wish to do this then do check with Naim - some kit it's a relatively simple case of rewiring and relabelling, but with other kit it requires a new transformer, so rather costly.
Davis,
for someone competent it is a trivial change with no new components required. The emphasis here is on the word competent. Naim or one of their service agents can do this quickly and easily for a comparatively reasonable amount of money.
Check out avoptions.com they're the US authorized Naim service center. I recently enquired with them about converting a UK 230V 172 to 115V for the US and the price for that was $195. It's quite a simple job for the 172 apparently, just some wiring changes. I don't know for the 200. If you decide to buy UK models, at the current exchange rate Naim components are much cheaper in the UK than in the US. For example the 172 costs around £1800 in the UK and $3600 in the US with a current exchange rate of £1 = $1.43.
Davis,
Transporting/converting 115V Naim gear to the UK, especially at the 172/200 level, doesn't seem a cost effective proposition to me. You're moving to the land of Naim. If I were in your position, I'd sell what you have in the US and find replacements in the UK. Save yourself the conversion and shipping costs. You'll also need new mains cords and you'll be faced with a new room as well. You could easily end up with an upgraded UK system for a commensurate overall cost.
Davis:
A quick example: I ordered a new NAP 250 DR a couple of weeks ago (arriving early next week .. yup yup). UK price is 3,495GBP, with an exchange rate of 0.7USD to the GBP that unit should cost around 4,793USD here in the States. Instead its cost is 6,995USD here .. A 2,202USD difference.
Newer equipment at a cheaper price .. what's wrong with that ? Sell everything and buy new.
