Qb question

Posted by: John132 on 01 April 2016

I've just bought a Qb and added it to my SuperUniti on the app. It's a wonderfully designed device and I've worked out how to stream radio from the SU to the Qb but can I play a cd on the CD5si through the SU and listen on the Qb a room away?

You can only use multi-room with UPnP, iRadio, and ISB/iPod inputs, so unfortunately, it won't work with CD. Time to rip your CDs to a NAS instead, perhaps?

Thanks Chris. It's disappointing. I decided to buy the Qb after the review in this month's HiFi Choice which suggests it will play whatever the main system is playing....humph!

It's Hifi Choice you should be cross with, not Naim!  Sloppy journalism.

Anyway the suggestion of ripping CDs to a NAS and the streaming them to your SuperUniti and Qb is a good one and is the cheapest way to go.

This is not so much a Qb question as a Superuniti question and the short answer is "no" (although I would be very happy to be proved wrong). The long answer follows.

The More on Multiroom and Party Mode link from this August 2013 update page https://www.naimaudio.com/news...update-now-available

says

Simply select ‘Rooms’ from the set up menu via the product front panel or remote handset or use the Naim Audio app to elect any of your Uniti players as the master. It will then stream music from its UPnP, USB/iPod or iRadio inputs over your home network to up to four clients in other rooms

Now we have the iOS app and Mutiroom is configured from the now playing screen for the Master room. The Mu-sos can now also work as Masters.

The June 2015 4.3 firmware update https://www.naimaudio.com/news...o-streaming-products lists the Superuniti Multiroom and Party Mode as Current Spec.

The list of updates for streaming products at https://www.naimaudio.com/updates refers to a November 2013 update 3.2.2 but gives no details. The October 2015 4.4 update listed there says nothing more about Multiroom.

It is a complicated story isn't it? I am sure I am not the only one wishing that the on-line manuals at least could be updated as each firmware update is released. There was even a Hints and Tips article in Connect a while back that incorrectly said that AirPlay could be used as a Multiroom source on the Mu-so. But it sadly turns out that Multiroom sources are sadly limited.

PS Just read the other posts about sloppy journalism but honestly, does the Naim documentation help?

That's really helpful even if it confirms the dreary conclusion. It does seem an unexpected omission though, I rather assumed a main feature of the SU and Qb would be seamless communication between them across all sources.

Well I guess you could get that from the SU to the Qb, but only by connecting the analogue output to the analogue input with a long cable!
