UPnP going not found on the Naim app
Posted by: Rjt36 on 03 April 2016
Hello,
I have successfully installed a Synology Nas today and have ripped some CDs using iTunes on my iMac which have then been saved onto the Nas. Ive then managed to stream to my Nac n 272! But for some reason, when I go back to the app (from say having used Tidal or Iradio) the nas drive then can't be found? The only way I seem to have managed it is by turning the nas off and on again!? Has anyone else experienced this and is there a solution?
thank you.
How is your network, ethernet or wireless, ethernet via the router or a switch, what is the app installed in
Is the router set to have all the devices - 272, NAS & app device - set to DHCP. ????
Thanks. It's Ethernet and Ethernet via a bthomehub 4. I've never touched the router settings and wouldn't be sure how to?
Also, on your synology if you are using it's media server you can turn down the interval at which it sends SSDP advertisement interval, I changed it from 920 seconds to 184.. Now all seems well..
OK it sounds like HH4 has got confused, you need to do a systematic restart to straighten it up ............
Turn it all off, wait 10 mins (so BT know you're off) then switch on in the following order.
HH4 ........ let it complete the start sequence ........ steady blue light & your iMac can see the 'tintaweb
NAS ....... let it finish its start sequence
272 ....... it should find the network on it own, but might need to be helped with the front panel buttons
iPhone ........ you might have a second look at the settings (in the tool (gear wheel) >UPnP - On >Multiroom - Off & in Other Settings >Stay Connected - On etc ........ thats it, no reason why it shouldn't behave provided you have not got into the HH4 settings
Thanks very much! Really appreciated. I will have a go with all of that tonight.
And try install minimserver on your synology! It's works way better than the stock synology media server. I got everything solved when changing to minimserver.
Nic, the problem is the app can't find the NAS, thats a discovery issue, nothing to do with Minimserver or Syn's Media Server. UPnP servers are a matter of personal choice, personally I prefer the Synology server
Thanks Mike understood. I was just wondering it's the sever discovery issues and I do find some problem with my stock media server that's why I'm suggesting might be worth to try. It's all up to personal preference for what to use tho. Anything hope the OP can find out the problem.
Rjt36 & NIc, take a look at the thread "Odd behaviour with Synology UPnP Server", it might be linked

Yes it sounds like the media server is not sending its multicast discovery responses to the network.... or the network is blocking them... Is there an option to increase the frequency of the advertising rate of the broadcast messages?
Also on the switch / router look for an option like IGMP snooping and try and set to disabled. If there is an issue with multicast setup somewhere then snooping could block the traffic making devices 'disappear' on the UPnP media network.
A work around kludge for IGMP snooping issues on small home networks is to sometimes use a small basic consumer switch to connect everything to including your router - these small consumer switch devices (like little Netgears etc) don't have the capability to process this data and so promiscuously rebroadcast it everywhere.... not good for efficiency but great for bypassing multicast group interoperability issues... and for a small home network efficiency is not usually a problem

Simon, the OP has a BT HH4, it does not have any option for enabling/disabling IGMP snooping
ahh ok - but it may have hard wired support for snooping for TV services - not familiar with HH4 - so if an issue my kludge suggestion may be a work around if the media server is not behaving itself

It might not be much help Simon if my current problem is the same, I have a switch & am getting similar iOS app to NAS discovery issues, either no connection or slow getting it, once hooked up its OK. The new Synology DSM-6 update seems to be the suspect, I'm clunking around a bit at the mo with it, but my new BT Infinity has gone tits up so its all a bit ..... lets call it ..... frustrating.
Mike - what wifi access point are you using into your switch? An Airport express or similar? What happened to your Infinity - that sounds ominous....
I don't use wireless to switch, its Ethernet from BT HH5. The OP is also not wireless (hence my comment that it might be the same as mine) he has ethernet from Nas - BT4 - 272 (no switch)
BT have finally raised a network defect on the problem; at moment Ookla is showing <8mb/s download, but the BT Wholesale test is >30mb/s. They don't accept Ookla but can't explain why Ookla & all the other www speed checkers agree with each other. BT Help Desk is trying, but it seems they are following the script rather than a technical knowledge. Its a shame because it ran so well until last weekend.
I'm back to normal service on broadband. I followed that up with a systematic all system power cycle, reinstalled the app & its all back to discovering the devices & running as normal.
Mike glad its working on the Infinity ... it sounds possibly like a bad sync speed. Anyway my point on wifi refers to the iPad and its ability to see the multicast discovery. If IGMP snooping is causing issues and enabled you want to stop that working on all participating segments including the wifi. An Airport Express into the simple switch bypasses this. So if the 272 can see the NAS on the internal display and not on the iPad on the Naim app - that could impliy the Naim amp is not seeing the discovery responses. In the early days I had issues similar to this using a Cisco router bridged internally to a Cisco wifi access point.. my work around was an Apple airport express into a switch with IGMP snooping disabled.

Thanks everyone. I've made the suggested changes to the SSD advertisement interval as well as following Mike -B's advice around resetting and rebooting the HH4 router, nas and 272 but the nas still keeps going as not found.
The only way I can get it to be seen is by turning the nas off and then on again? Any more ideas please?
And one other challenge is that I am using itunes to rip the cd's but every time I use it, I keep having to change the default location using the guidelines below. But it then changes back to the old itunes location e.g. away from the NAS. Is this normal or is there a way to permanently reset it? Thank you!
"Change where imported files are stored
Choose iTunes > Preferences and click Advanced.
Click Change and select a new location for your files.
From now on, new songs and other items you import will be stored in the new location. Songs you’ve already imported stay in their current location.
To go back to storing imported files in the iTunes folder, choose iTunes > Preferences, click Advanced, and click Reset."

I would migrate to a different ripper if I were you. XLD on the Mac, or dbPoweramp on the PC. dbPoweramp runs on OS X as well.

This is not making sense. Starting from the top & one step at a time.
Are you sure you have the Naim app settings correct ...... does the app "find the rooms" & is the Input Settings > UPnP > Input Enabled "checked" (on)
Is the BT HH4 seeing all the network on its webpage & is each device (NAS & 272) set to DHCP - the BT settings are in BT Advanced Settings - Network > NAS \ IP address assignment: DHCP \ Always use this IP address = No
What Synology Package(s) have you installed - Synology webpage (http://192.168.1.201:5000/index.cgi) > Package Center > Installed. You should have Media Server. If you have & you can open it up on you PC & all the items in this post are done, there is no reason why you keep loosing the NAS
Hi Mike, you are terribly generous with your help. I've been through your brilliant guide and it does all look as if it is set up correctly and exactly as you describe.
I have Package centre and media server installed.
And the app does find the rooms and can stream Tidal etc., but then for some reason can't always locate the nas - in which case I turn it off and on and it then seems to be ok.
Thanks again.
One more thing ............ firewall
Control Panel > Info Center > Service .......... In the "Enable" column, check only the Media Server box .......... In the column "Allow Through Firewall" check all the boxes ...........
Ok, thanks, Mike. I will check and report tomorrow!......assume you are referring to the homehub?
Do you think another modem/router might help?
No, I'm referring to the Synology NAS ....... webpage ........... Control Panel > Info Center > Service
