UPnP going not found on the Naim app

Posted by: Rjt36 on 03 April 2016

Hello,

I have successfully installed a Synology Nas today and have ripped some CDs using iTunes on my iMac which have then been saved onto the Nas. Ive then managed to stream to my Nac n 272! But for some reason, when I go back to the app (from say having used Tidal or Iradio) the nas drive then can't be found? The only way I seem to have managed it is by turning the nas off and on again!? Has anyone else experienced this and is there a solution?

thank you.

Thanks Mike. So, I've unticked some of the boxes in Info Centre/Service/Packages - so, now only have Media Server box ticked. But I can't see any column that says "allow through firewall"

The three headings I have within Info Centre/Service/Packages are Internet Services (nothing ticked), Lan Services (Windows File Service and Mac File Service ticked) and then Packages (only Media Server ticked).

Sorry to be a pain!

Hi, the fact you say it works when you reset the NAS then stops over time is a helpful clue...

are you using the intermediary simple switch I suggested earlier in the thread.. That is your router, NAS, wifi and streamer are all connected to this switch...

if yes, what is the period of the device going not found? You could try by temporarily manually assigning the IP address of the NAS.. Does that change things..

if not then this does point to errant ARP (unlikely)  or UPnP discovery responder code in the NAS media server software (more likely). The resolution here will be the NAS provider or change media server and/or run seperately from the NAS.. (Which I recommend anyway)

......... Control Panel > Info Center > Service   This is what you should see,  the column with all the boxes ticked is "Allow Through Firewall"  .    It's what I have & it works,   don't ask why as I just did what Synology set up disk advised when I set it up.

I'm on the move at moment & the rest of today so I can only get connections when in hotspots  ..........

I understand no switch is used,  its NAS<->BT HH4<->272

Once the firewall thing has been confirmed (& it should be set correctly by the Synology set up disk) I would be tempted to go over the systematic power off & on cycle again - as per my post  03/04/16 @ 23:52.      If the router/ISP did not have the down time long enough to log it was off line,  it might have retained the previous settings ..............   Failing that the Synology set up disk might be worth a repeat try ..........  outside of that this does not make sense.

Thanks again! I'm away from home until tonight but I'm 99% certain I don't have the 'allow through firewall' column?

But as a matter of course, I will do the extended power down sequence again.

I don't have a 'simple switch' in the current set up?

OK RTJ36,  I see it.    Control Panel > Security > Firewall ----> tick Enable Firewall box  ( & tick Enable Firewall Notifications if not already done)

Then go back to  Control Panel > Info Center > Service ----->  now you will see the column "Allow Through Firewall  ............  tick all boxes in that column  &  the Media Server box in the Enable column  (see my previous picture)

Great,  it was a bit frustrating as I guessed why the column had disappeared from your webpage but could not try it myself to be sure as I was travelling all day.   Anyhow,  question is - has it fixed the problem.

Simon,  as we wait for RJT36's news,  I really can't see why/how discovery code issues with the standard Synology DSM package could be possible;  this is one of the worlds best selling NAS makes & its standard DSM (OS) is more or less plug & play when installed with the set up disc.  If you did a NAS manufacturer poll on the forum I would bet Synology are in the top 3 & Synology users do not have this problem.    The fact that it makes a connection & then looses it indicates to me that something has been missed in the set up stage & that the firewall enable was missed is indicative of that.  Anyhow,  lets wait for the news

I really appreciate such brilliant advice - I'm back home at the weekend and will report then.

Reading this thread with interest as I've been experiencing upnp and connection issues since the Synology update. Minimserver gone pearshaped so reverting to Media server for the moment. I seem to have spent the last few evenings constantly fettling with BT home hub, wireless networks, ethernet connections etc to resolve the problems. Will also try out some of the tips outlined above.

Please post what you find Pixies,  I'm interested.   I've not found any problems since DSM-6,  I had Minimserver installed but not running as I prefered Syn's Media Server,  but found it handy to switch over to it to join in with posts, but as its been effectively dropped by Synology since DSM-6 & not worth the trouble to re-install,  I've uninstalled it  (& thats a shame,  as is the Syn policy for not letting in other 3rd party programs like Asset)  Anyhow, after DSM-6, it indicated Syn's Media Server needed to be updated, a button touch & 2 seconds it was done.  Since then I've had no problems at all,  just like before with DSM-5 series,  rock solid.

Have you done a power & broadband systematic power cycle  .........  & I mean a proper systematic

Hi Mike-B. I've not done a full power and broadband systematic powerdown. I've tended to focus only on the home hub end which is why your tips are usefull and will be implemeted when I get home from the office.

So.......I've followed all the brilliant advice  - so far, so good!.........will update further if I have any more problems.

Very much appreciated, all.
