Nac 12 vs 72

Posted by: Fred11 on 04 April 2016

Hi all!
I would be very grateful for any wisdom regarding how a good condition nac 12 compares to a nac 72, with a 180 (recapped), LP12 and SBL?

Very well indeed if you can live with the looks and limited features, still cute in its own way the 12 and a classic for sure.

Thanks for answer!

Is your view in terms of pure soundquality?

And a Nac 12 it was!

Got a recapped nap 180 also. The pre is fed of the internal ps of the nap. It receives signal from a ndac-xps-usb-mac-audirvana and a lovely LP12-adikt-akito-armageddon. My God, it sounds fantastic. So musical and right. Hard to describe in words. Do not understand how a 40 year old pre can beat my Supernait 1-hicap in terms of musicality. It also almost offer the same scale and power as the SN, perhaps a little less, but gives more insight and a faster and more analogue feel.
The SN goes, the 12 stays, for sure.

BTW, according to the owner it is probably screwed together by the Godfather himself, Mr Vereker, may he rest in peace. He receives my thoughts this evening for his fantastic thought and soulful engineering.

Apparently in the factory they used to test new nac 52 against the nac 12 before des patching to customers

Can anyone describe positives or negatives regarding making it dual-rail? I have one Olive hicap and one hicap-dr. Richard, or anyone else, please?

Dear Analogmusic.

I have also read this. Interesting to know how it compares...

Years ago in 1985 I sent my 42 to be upgraded to 42.5 spec at the factory and my dealer lent me a 12.I was pleasantly surprised how good it sounded.I did have a new Hicap but I don't think the 12 I borrowed was dual railed.

I was quite familiar with the voicing of the 32 preamp and thought the 12 was closer to that.Getting the 42 back I thought it sounded fine but lacked the High frequency sparkle of the 12 and didn't sound so airy. After a couple of years I sold my Naim 42 Hicap 250 in favour of a Bryston 12B  pre and 2 B power amp which are still going well in my vintage system.Still using my Nat 01 though.

Hope you get much enjoyment from your 12 it's  a lovely little preamp

I can't help you there Fred.  My own NAC12 I have kept single rail.  I'd imagine the benefits of dual rail might best be appreciated when using the phono section.  But without being able to listen, I couldn't say for sure.

Thanks for reply, Tabby.

Very interesting findings. The sparkle and Insight is also what beats me. I had a 202-200-hicap-dr and now a Supernait-hicap dr. I feel I get mor Insight than both, 202-200 is perhaps on par, but less musical and warm. Its funny, since its so old, and built like a tin can compared to the modern boxes: )

I think it must have been a dual railed one, since a hicap will only function if its dual-railed.

Dear Richard, thank you anyway. By going dual rail I am afraid of loosing the "Magic". I play 70 (vinyl)-30 (digital), so bettering the phono would not hurt, though.

Have a nice day, everyone.
