Restore speaker balance

Posted by: Karen on 04 April 2016

During experimenting with the remote for the NAC 202, I quickly pressed the balance buttons earlier this winter. Now, the speakers seem to be out of balance with one speaker putting out a higher volume than the other. Does anyone have any tips on restoring the balance? Would returning the one speaker to center solve the problem? Thanks.

The speaker balance on the remote is to be used don't be afraid of it - a lot of recordings are actually a bit skewed to one channel + room acoustics + our hearing all come into play.

How to restore the balance on your amp - a bit tricky on the 202 since there is no separate manual balance.

You could try the following: download a decibel meter on to ipad / iphone / android device.
Find a track that has a steady output level in both channels.
Measure dB level in both speakers - here you could disconnect the speaker that you do not measure at the time, to avoid the cross-talk.

Unfortunately I'm not aware of any bypass / manual button combination that can 'centre' 202.

I thought that if you used the remote it the  green light on volume of  the 202 flashes when it's in the middle i.e. centred volume

Or failing all else, use the balance control on the remote to rebalance it.  You can keep doing it until it sounds ok for you. If it sounds ok, then it is ok!

Actually SJW is right.  It is all explained on page 21 in the English version of the manual which you can easily find on Naim's website.  Basically you use the balance button in the direction you think is too quiet and it will centre and the light in the volume control flash. It stays centred unless you release the button and press it again to keep increasing the level in the direction you were going.

Thanks for the replies. I used the balance buttons and indeed, one speaker was out of balance. Excellent learning experience and I am no longer afraid to experiment.
