backing up a US to a computer

Can this be done?
My (new ) US needs to go back to Naim and I'm trying to do a quick backup first, without going to the expense of a NAS.
I've connected a MacBook to the router but it is showing as 'unavailable (red light) in Manage shares/Network shares.
You can use Finder to connect to the US.
1/ Under 'Go' select 'Connect to server' ;
2/ Type in nssrvXXXX, where XXXX is the serial number of your US.
3/ Login as Guest
Once you're in the MQ folder, copy your files to your computer (assuming you have the space) ; if not, then a USB drive. Be patient...

Thanks, I'll drag the files to the computer.
[One of the reasons the US is going back is that it doesn't recognise any USB drives - including a mains powered, Windows formatted Seagate I've just bought.]
From memory, the US does not work with USB drives anyway.
I naively expected that I'd be able to back up to a USB - you know, like every other computer I've owned. That I can't is definitely something I wish I'd known pre-purchase.
But I've got plenty of music on USB sticks the US doesn't recognise. I wanted to consolidate these onto the Seagate drive.
Why, I wonder, does the US have four USB slots?
I had no problem mounting 1TB USB3.0 drives on my US SSD when I had one, played back and navigated files no issues, the drive was formatted to MS-DOS (FAT) same as the USB sticks I used on the US that worked. Not sure how you would set up any back though, does the n-Serve (on me for OS X) in the maintenance tab allow for backing up the stores, or through the web browser via the US (going from memory now)
If you connect a drive to your computer, you can simply drag files from the US to it. I'm not sure how successful it would be to use them as a full backup if you had to restore the US, but at least you'd still have the music. I've done this frequently when I want to use the US rips to play on other devices such as a Walkman, or a USB stick I use in my car. Best to convert everything to FLAC on the US before you start.
Thanks Chris - I've still got the cds so it's just a time saving exercise if Naim have to wipe the drive on the US. About 176Gb - all flac - going to take 'a day'.
Naim will look after your music while your US is with them. Even if they have to replace the HD, they can copy the files across from the old HD (this I gather from what others have said in this forum, rather than from my own experience). Once you get it back, you might want to think backing up to a NAS though.

The first time my US failed, the dealer wasn't able to save my music so i had to rerip over 500 cds!!
The second time it failed, it was simpler as the dealer could retrieve my music. I used this opportunity to upgrade my US to the 2Tb version with the download folder. Now I also have a Nas....
I use FAT-formatted, mains-powered USB drive on my US-SSD for all music storage. I haven't tried connection NTFS format device. Do the USB ports work with memory sticks?

Yes -they do. You can connect USB drives or sticks to a UnitiServe.

Thanks David, good to know. I'll get the US sent off next week.

There is absolutely no guarantee that Naim will be able to do this, any more than there is that the unit won't be lost or damaged by the courier. If you regard your original CDs as an adequate backup, fair enough, but relying on a single drive to hold your data reliably in any circumstancess is extremely naive.

I don't think I said there was any guarantee? Although as the US is going back with a fully functioning HD, it seems more likely than not that Naim will avoid messing that up, and Phil has previously said that they can sometimes recover data from a failed hard drive. But anyway we agree re the importance of backups.

David, I understand and accept your caveats.
