Stand Mount Speakers for 300 DR / 252

Posted by: Zipperheadbanjo on 08 April 2016

I think I am going to start demo-ing some stand mount speakers and wondering what I should put on the short list... budget is around 5K - 10K (Canadian). My system is a 300 DR / 252 (sources NDX>Hugo TT / Rega RP 10 / Superline / Supercap). Listening room is small-ish... 12 feet x 13 feet x 9 feet ceiling height.

Would prefer to not have a sub in the room if possible. The only product that I know will be included in my testing is the Focal Sopra 1... which is at the top of my budget range.

Current speakers are Proac DR30's which I will be keeping and eventually pressing into service on a 2nd system.

Kudos S10 on heavy metal stands with Track Audio isolation feet.

Neat XLS

If you can find these anywhere near where you live, then it would be a good place to start.  However, I am not sure that either will out perform Proac D30R, a speaker that I particularly like.

Best regards, FT

Actually there happens to be an ex dem pair of S10's at a somewhat local dealer. I'll check them out.

I particularly like the D30R's as well... but am curious to see if stand mounts would work better given the small dimensions of my room. It may turn out that I give a listen to some, and end up sticking with the D30R's in the listening room.

Also you may consider Totem's Fire or Ember. They are made in Canada and i suspect that will be cheaper and easy  to arrange a demo.

Heard the Sopra 1 on the end of a 250dr at the Bristol Hi Fi show earlier  this year they are rather good well worth a listen.

Neat XLS, Focal Sopra 1 or Kudos S 10.

I use ATC SCM 19 speakers on my 250 and I use (really importantly) open framed light weight wooden tripod stands, both with speaker and floor decoupling to a concrete floor

i have found the stand with standmounts surprisingly crucial for optimum performance.. I have also discovered that no stand-mount speaker I have ever owned sounds totally happy with high mass stands to a solid concrete floor.. Bass can get over weight and upper mids and treble appear to get smeared... I looked into the physics of this as it was counter intuitive. and it's a fascinating area.. I think Huge on this forum is very knowledgable on this matter.

I use a pair of Kudos S10 on the end of a 272/XPS-DR/200-DR and could not be happier. As I found out the over the last few years of owning these speakers, they require a very good front end to shine. Since pairing them with the system above, they just sound incredible. I also have a somewhat smallish listening room. I am sure that your system would make these speakers come to life.

Another speaker you might like is the the Neat Momentum SX3i, the Ultimatum XLS or even a pair fo Dynaudio Confidence C1 which I've heard with a Chord amp and DAC, they sounded very good.

Interesting insight Simon. My floors are hardwood... the listening room is on the main floor of the house so the hardwood sits on top of floor joists... any thoughts on how this impacts selection of stands?

I use Harbeth SHL5+ with 552/300 and the match is amazing. Please note however that you may have to wait a few months (I'm my case 3.5) to get them as Harbeth have a hard time meeting the demand for them

I would also recommend giving the Sopra 1 an audition.

I had the chance to listen to these recently and really liked what I heard. Unfortunately Totem prices in the UK are quite steep compared to here in North America. You could always buy a plane ticket and haul them back with you.

I have my super 10's on Atacama stand's with lead shot down the center and works very well on a concrete floor .

Be care when choosing a stand for what ever you speakers you decide to buy and they do not work on all  floors .

Which Atacama stands are you using ? I am currently using the Kudos S50 on hardwood floors over a thin concrete slab and on the advice of my audio dealer, filled up the pillars with sand until the ringing disappeared (about less than half the height of the stand). He also suggested I try a pair from Custom Design stands.

Linn Akudoric's? Possibly? Never actually heard them myself but shouldn't they be included in this company?

Could you please specify brand/model of stands you use? I have speakers decoupled to high mass stands (hollow filled with glass shot) and am struggling with ''smearing'' Floor is wood, not concrete.

Im not sure which model they are .

The custom design stands work well on a suspended floor and i tried them on concrete and they killed the super 10 , thought i had blown a tweeter .:-(
